THE POSITION OP THE COLONIES. POPULARITY OF NEW ZEALAND. Received May 18, 8.34 a.m. BRISBANE. May 18. Malcolm M'Eaoharn, of MUI- - M'Eaoharn and Co., steamship owners, merchants, and coal contractors, and a director of several other companies, who nas just returned from a visit to Europe and the Epst, referring to the position Australia held at Home, said Canada was ten , times more popular than Australia; so was New Zealand. Not one spoke a bad word for New Zealand ; everything that came from that colony was suppoaed to be good. The reason that Australia came out in so unfavourable a light was due to the fact that some of her own people were always crying "stinking fish." The Commonwealth's unoopularity, added Sir Malcolm, was due to a want of patriotism on the part of some Australians. MR SEDDON'S VISIT. AN OFFICIAL DINNER. V Received May 18, 9.45 a.m. SYDNEY, May 18. Mr Seddon was entertained at a dinner la<it nigh* by members of the State Ministry. The gathering was a most representative one, and included Mr Deakin (the Federal Premier),. Sir William Lyne (Federal Minister of Trade and Customs), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President of the Legislative Council, the Lord Mayor of Sydney, Mr M'Gowen (Leader of the Opposition), and Mr Jackson (of tha Union Company). 'ENTERTAINED BY NEW ZEALAND RESIDENTS. Received May 19, 1.40 a.m. SYDNEY, May 18. The Now Zealanderß' banquet and reception to Mr Seddon to-night was the most brilliant function yet carried out by the New Zealanders living here. Mr Seddon delivered a vigorous speeeh.
