THE NATIVE DISTURBANCE. Received May 17, 9.20 a.m. FIETERMARITZBURG May 16. Rebels are inoeused against Bambaata and witch doctors. Native women ioan be heard nightly wailing in the hush over the dead natives. Colonel Baker's i force burned a number of kraals in the Ekombi oistricfc. Five hundred rebels followed the column, but were repulsed, losing five. TWO MORE CHIEFS JOIN THE REBELS. MAIN BODY STILL WITHIN COLONEL MACKENZIE'S AREA OF OPERATIONS. Received May 17, 11.57 p.m. LONDON. May 17. The Pietermaritzburg correspondent ot the Times states that while it is intended that the martial law tribunal shall deal with the ringleaders and chiefs in special courts, a 'Magistrate is arranging to deal with the rank and file, with power to Impose penalties up to two gears' imprisonment and also lashes. Everything will be submitted to a % revision ot the centrnl authority. The chiefs Meflokazulu and Ngux have joined the rebels. They have abandoned their kraals, and have removed their womeu and stock. Tho main body of the rebels are still within Colonel Mackenzie's area of operations. PROCLAMATION OF MARTIAL LAW. APPLICATION AT BOW STREET. LONDON, May 16. At Bow Street yesterday, Mr E. G. Jellkoe (formerly of Wellington, New Zepland) applied for a process on two informations—one by F. Colenso —against Sir Henry M'Callum, Governor of Natal, for aots of oppression in , Natal, involving the illegal proclamation of martial law and the homicide of 14 natives. The Magistrate decided to hear the application in private, and fused to admit a shorthand writer. Mr Jellicoe announced that the ; application, under the cfircumstauces, would be withdrawn.
