- ♦ monthly report. The journal of the Department of Labour for May contains the lollowing with reference to the labour market in Masterton and Tinui. MAS'IERTON. There is no change sinoe last report, busineso geuorally continuing to be quite up to the usual standard. Reports vary somewhat, but in the large majority of cases very good business has been done, notwith -Standing the greatly increased competition in most lines. Building tradoa: All olaaesß hare been fully employed during the month. Some contractors report sufficient work in hand for some time to come, and there are reports of other work to be shortly put in hand which will insure employment for local tradesmen well into the winter. Engineering trales: Business has again been tairly good; some report a slight eaaing-off since last report, while others state that business is brisk. Tailoring trade: A fairly good season's trade has been done. Dressmaking: About the usual average for this season; a little overtime was worked prior to the Easter holidays. Saddle and harness makers: A fair business has been done, all hands working full time. Ooachbuilding: About as usual. Local tradesman ha~e been kept fully employed. Bricktraking: Busy. There are quite a number of brick buildings at present, in course of erection. Furniture trade: Owing to the steady increase of population, a satisfactory business continues to ba done by the furniture manufacturers. All ,local hands fully employed. Retail trades (general): Traders state that they have no cause to complain, and, generally speaking, trade has been good during: the month. UnsKilled labour: Work has been fairly plentiful throughout the district for able-bodied labourers, and the supply has been about sufficient to meet the demand. TINUI. Building trades: Brisk. All carpenters have , been fully employed during the month repairing and ereoting dwelling-houses. detail trade: Good busiuess has been doing in all branches during the month. Unskilled labour: All local men have been fully employed during the month, at road-work, fencing, scrub-cutting,' chaff cutting, fire-wood-cutting, and ploughing. Only a few swaggers were seen on the road during the month, ahd they bad no trouble in obtaining work at sorub-cutting. Several good men are required for scrub-cutting in this district at Is per hour.
