The Committee appointed to deal with the question Of promotion of probationer nurses and their, salaries, reported having examined the praotice of the Napier ahd Palmerston North .Hospitals, and the Wellington District Hospital, and they recommended the following extracts for adoption(l) Applicants for admission as probationers must furnish a certificate, of health, testimonials as to character, produce evience of fair education, and satisfactory proof of age; (2) probationer nurses shall be taken on trial for three months, and if found suitable at the end of that time, should be taken on as junior probationers, and receive a salary of £lB for first year, t and £25 for the seoond and third years provided they have passed the matron's course. The recommendations were adopted. It was decided to appoint Nurse Steward as charge nurse and Miss Jobusou, of Kaituoa, with tn matron's approval, as probationer, e It was resolved that before calling tenders for the new hospital the specifications should bo submitted to Drs. Hosking and Ross, and a committee consisting of Messrs J. A. Renall J. E. Keith, W. Harris and J. C. Ewington and the ActingChairman for inspection. According to the Taranaki Herald, a New Plymouth tailor is reported to have made a couple cf very profitable suits of clotfies reoently. A customer offered him, some weeks ago, a couple of petroleum shares in payment, for two suits, and he accented the offer, recognising that if the sorip was only worth its face value, he was not ill-paid for his work. He has just disposed of one of the £5 shares for £49, and steadily refuses to part with the other. The other party to the transaction is probably not in the same self-satisfied frame of mind.
