CRIME IN AUSTRALIA.
Received May 14, 9.44 p.m. LONDON, May 14. Mr T. A. Coghlan, Agent-General for New Koutb Wales, in a letter to The Times, emphatically denies that crime has greatly increased in Australia since the abolition of th« State aided denominational sobools in the cities. Statistics showed that during tbe last 30 years tbe arrests in New South Wales and Viotorip have declined considerably more than one-tbird. The greatest improvement has been since 1890. As regards serious crime tne improvement is equally satisfactory. The actual oonfineea in Australian prisons are considerably loss now than 20 years ago. The Australian , native-born are far less given, to oritne than those who have been educated elsewhere.
