Census returns show the populaI tion of the Borough of Gore to be ' 3,040, being an ' increase of 686 since 1901. The body of a man, about 35 or 40 years of age, was found in the Wellington Harbour yesterday morning. Deoeased apparently was a seafarer. An Auoklani telegram states that the certificated Engine-Drivers Union has decided to withdraw the dispute from the Arbitration Court. This aotion has been taken owing to the unsatisfactory award in Wellington. The furniture warehouse of Hurley and Co., at Balclutha, was burned down on Wednesday evening. The insurances on the stock, building and machinery amounted to £I,OOO. The loss is estimated at £2,000 over the insuranoe. At the Wellington Supreme Court sittings on Thursday, the jury brought in a verdict of I "not guilty" in the case in which Henri Booquet was charged with having attempted to murder James Reille at Day's Bay, on March 27th. At the Masterton S.M. Court, yesterday, before Messrs E. MoEwen and E. G. Eton, J's.P., Oarl Carlson was fined 20s for having been drunk and 20s for having wilfully damaged Government property. William Humphries was fined 20s for having been drunk, it being his third offenoe. Dr. Pomaro. who has just returned from a visit to tbe northern islands of the Cook Group, says that in two islands especially there are many traces of leprosy, which had their origin years back. He stated that there is no cause for alarm, precautions having been taken to prevent tbe spread of the disease. The Postmaster (Mr 'W. H. Niobolis) advises that there will be no steamer from Auckland for San Francisco on the 25th instant, and none on June 15th. Service from San Francisco will be resumed by tbe steamer leaving for New Zealand on 31st instant. In the meantime use is to be made of Brindisi, Vancouver and direct steamers for mails from this colony.
A number of very finely-grown chrysanthemum blooms, 'grown by Mr E. Hale, of the Wairarapa Nursery, Te Ore Ore Eoad, are at present on view in the grooery department of the W.P.O.A. The most prominent of ihe new varieties are: —"Sir Geo. White" (yellow and brown), "Miss Maud Jeffries" (white), "Mrs Greenfield" (yellow), "Mrs S. F. Vallis" (yellow), and "Mrs E. Ourrie" (mauve). Trouble is still experienced on the Wellington tramway servioe through the risua taken by passengers alighting from oars when the latter are in motion. In many oases the passengers who run this risk do not escape without injury. In a recent instance, a man rang the bell on the car for tne motorman to stop, but, being too impatient to wait until the oar pulled up, the passenger jumped off, despite the fact that the car was travelling at the rate of 12 miles an hour. A telegram from Palmeiston North utates that William Knowlea, charged with the murder of his wife, Adele Ann Knowles, on April 28th, has been committed for trial.
The Native Bduoation Endowment Commission met at Napier, yesterday, but adjourned till Monday to allow of Mr Ngata, a member of the Commission, being present.
The weekly meeting of the Kuripuni Mutual Improvement Society was held in the Kuripuni Wesleyan Church last evening. The Rev. J. N. Buttle occupied the Jchair, and there was a good attendance of members. The evening was devoted to a "Question Box."
The morning and evening services at the Masterton Presbyterian Ohurob, to-morrow, will be conducted by the Kev. J. Kennedy Elliot, of Wellington. The Wangaehu services will be taken by Mr F. W. G. McLeod, and thw Dreyerton services by the Rev. 3. Kenndy Elhot.
A telegram from Wellington last evening stated that a deputation from the Council of Churches waited on the Minister for Justice yesterday, and urged upon him the desirableness of introducing a system of indeterminate sentences in the case of habitual criminals. The Minister in reply said that he intended to place proposals before the Ministry on the subject, and he hoped tbat something of value would be evolved. It would be hard if a prisoner, even if a bad man, should hav« no chance v uf liberation after his oonviotion. He thought it would be a good thing if the causes of criminality were investigated. A special knowledge on this subject should be cultivated at the University.
A meeting of the Committee of the Masterton Gymnasium was held, last night;, in Messrs Gawith and Logan's office, Mr Williams being in the ohair. Several new members were eleoted. Votes of thanks were passed to the donors of wophies. Dr Cook was eleoted honorary surgeon to the club. The following have promised trophies :— Mis J. Longstaff (trophy for children), and Messrs W. G. Beard (challenge trophies for men's and ladies 1 classes), D. E. Logan, W, Eh Gruickshank, and D. Gaaelbefg. The men's class will have their next practice on Monday night, under the leadership of squad leaders,; and it will be interesting to, watch how this innovation will work. Indications point to the olub having a very saoessful season this year.

At Wellington yesterday Dr. McArthur, S.M., issued an order authorising Mr J. C. George, of New Plymouth, to commence a oriminal libel action against the editor (H. D. Merrick) and publisher (J. T. MoKinnon) of the newspaper Truth. In giving judgment His Worship said: "In my opinion the article," which is the ground for the action, "tends to disturb the good order of the community, and is not unlikely to provoke a breaoh of the peace. The interests of the public are affected thereby, and in the absence of any affidavit from the intended defendants in answer to that of Archibald William Blair, I am not satisfied that an action for damages would answer every purpose." Mr Craoroft Wilson, acting for Mr Wilford, intimated that he would move for an order of prohibition. , The annual presentation of prizes in connection with the Opaki Rifle Club took place last evening at (he residence of Mr A. J. Cameron, at Te Ore Ore. There was a large number of members of the Glob and friends present. Mr D. McGregor, jnr., Captain of the Fairview Rifle Olub, occupied the. chair. A number of speeches were made, and the evening was spent in a convivial manner. The trophies were presented to the winners as follow: Captain Welch's cup, won by Rifleman J. Henry; the President's rose bowl, won by Rifleman.Mawley; Mr A. P. Whatman's cup, won by Rifleman J. McKeuzie; Messrs Levin and Co. r s cup, won by Rifleman J. Turn bull; Mr A. J. FACTS ESTABLISHED AT COURT. In an action, the cause of which was flagrant misuse of our firm name and other gross misrepresentation by an imi tating company, which was tried before his Honor, Oh'ef Justice J. The heaviest pumpkin at the Otaki ■ Show turned the scale at 851b, the heaviest marrow 29>£lb, and the heaviest cabbage 201b. A cablegram from Pekin states that liohliang, President of the Board of Revenue, has been appointed Superintendent of Chinese Customs Affairs. Tongsbaoi has been appointed Associate-Minister of Customs. All Chinese and foreigners in the various Customs offices have been plaoed under their control. ,
A telegram from Nelson states that the ten-roomed house of Mr -George Kite, at Tadmor, has been destroyed by fire. Mrs Kite and her son were the only occupants at the time, and th? formwr was awakened by something falling. Finding her room full of smoke, she rushed to her son's room, where the flames were breaking through alongside hie bed. Having aroused him, they escaped. Nothing was saved.
A Government parade of the Masterton Rifle Volunteers was held last evening. Captain Charters was in tjommand, and there were 40 Volunteers present. The company were exercised in the open air in attack drill by half-company's and sections. On Thursday next the company will be inspected by Colonel Babington, Commandant of the New Zealand Foioes. Daring the week the company received a Maxim gun, and squads aro now being instructed in the working of the gun.
At the gathering held at the residence of Mr A. J. Cameron, at Te Ore Ore, last evening, in connection with the presentation of prizes won "Jby members of the Opaki Rifle Club, daring last season, eulogistio reference was made by several speakers to the excellent work Mr W. J. Welch bad done as Captain Of the Club. Mr Welch had beea Captain of the Olnb for 15 years, and the present efficient state of the Club was in a large measure due to him. As a mark of esteem the members presented Captain Welch with a handsome framed photograph of the members of the Opaki Rifle Club. Captain Welch saitabiy acknowledged the gift.
The ordinary meeting of Court Loyal Enterprise, A.0.P., was held in the Foresters' Hall last evening, Bro. F. Fear, 0.R., presiding. Correspondence was reoeived from the Secretary of Court Koruaranga, requesting that the name of one of their members should be placed on the surgeon's list in Masterton. The Secretaries of Comt City of Auckland and Court Sir George Bowen, Wellington, wrote forwarding contributions. It was decided to vote one guinea to the Masterton Friendly Societies' Council towards working expenses. One candidate was proposed for initiation.

Messrs Pinhey Bros, advertise that they want to purohase five tons of oarrots and one ton of mangolds. The Masterton Borough Council invite tenders, to close at 4 p.m, on Tuesday, 15th instant, for erecting a stop bank near Bruce Street. Tbe Masterton Borough Council notify that tbe abattoir has been registered and will be open for slaughtering atonk on June Ist next. At their rooms, Perry Street, at 2 o'clock, to-day, Messrs Heoksber and Co., Ltd., will sell at auction the furniture of a resident who is leaving the district. Particulars of the entry appear elsewhere. Mr J. R. Nicol will sell, at his rooms, at 1.30 p.m. to-day, the balance of Mr W. Booth's groceries, a quantity of drapery, on account of Mr Daroy ford, and general lines of furniture. Dr. Elmslie, spacialißt, formerly of The Terrace, Wellington, has removed for a time to Christohuroh, hie present address being 230, Madras Street, where all correspondence will have his personal attention.
