THE NATIVE DISTURBANCE. COST OF SUPPRESSING THE RISING. Received May 7, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, May 6. Natal ia asking lor power to borrow £500,000 to cover the cost of suppressing the insurrection. ZULUS ATTACK COLONEL MANSELL'S FORCE. A DESPERATE CHARGE. REBELS REPULSED. SIXTY ZULUS KILLED. Received May 7, 9.36 p.m. PIETERMARITZBURG, May 7. Colonel Mansell has reaobed Fort Yolland, 18 miles west of Eshowe. He reconnoitred towards Cetawayo's grave. Whilst the force were travelling through a forest several shots were fired, wounding a trooper. As the troop were descending a hill in single file, and entering the more open country, 200 Zulus desperately charged the vanguard of the Natal Mounted Rifles, and almost got in amongst the troopers. The Natal supporters rushed up and the attack was repelled. Sixty Zulus were killed, and many wounded. Three Natal troopers were wounded. A thousand rebels were seen. The indications are that while a portion of the rebels made the first onslaught they re-engaged by an en- ' circling movement, which proved premature. Colonel Manßell reports that the native police attached to the Natal Mounted Rifles behaved courageously, and did good work during the engagement. TWO HUNDRED CATTLE CAPTURED. MANY KRAALS BURNT. Received May 8, 12.20 a.m. PIBTERMARITZBURG, May 7. Colonel Mansell captured two hundred cattle and burnt many kraals. On emerginc from the forest and returning to the fort, small bodies of the enemy followed and indulged in "sniping." Tho Ore was returned, the Zulus losing several men. Colonel Mansoll commends the Durban Light Infantry for their steadiness at a critical stage, which prevented serious casualties. Only Colonel Mausell's prompt disposition of his foroos prevented his assailants completing the identical crescent formation employed at Jsandhlwana. Colonels Mackenzie and Mansell are trying to keep the rebels together, then crushing them.
