CRICKETERS' EXPENSES.
DISCUSSION AT THE NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL. CHRISTCHCRCH, May 1. A meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council was held last night. A balance-sheet was submitted showing the accounts in connection with tbe visit of tbe Melbourne Crioket Club. Tbe receipts amounted to £6OO, the proceeds from tbe New Zealand test match amounting to £4B. . There was a loss on the tour of £6l. Mr Kaphael, hon. secretary, pointed out that the real loss was £lll, including the guarantee of £SO. He drew attention to the heavy expenses charged by the players. It was high time something was done, as he was sorry to say there was very little bonoar attached to playing for New Zealand; it seemed to be a question of what could be made out of it. Five and six shillings were charged for cab fares at times when he knew only Is 6d and 2s was the fare; that was just an instance of the spirit shown. The chairman oritioised the payment of wages to players. Other members thought the players should receive only aotual cutofpooket expenses. They did not want any "cash amateurs." Mr Jameson gave notice to move at the next meeting that in future only out-of-pouket expenses be paid to players in representative matches.
Tbe statement of aocoants was adopted. The secretary stated that an invitation had been sunt to the Marylebone Orioket Oiab to send out an amateur team to New Zealand. The secretary to that body had replied stating that nothing definite had been arrived at yet.
Quotations were received from a London -firm of underwriters for insuring two test matches against loss by bad weather.
