Mrs, Harris, who was charged with the murder of Fred. Murfitt, on Maruh 21st, by shooting him, has been committed for trial. A meeting of the? Stewards of the Mastertou Kacing Club will be held on Saturday afternoon next, at 2:30 o'clock. The programme committee of the Club will nseet on Friday to draw up dates for the coming year's meetings. Despite the unsettled state of th* weather, yesterday afternoon, a large number of people were present in thb Park, when the Masterton Municipal Brass Band rendered a number of selections, which were'much appreciated, including the latest piece "Welcome All-Blacks." The Masterton season of the"Living London" pictures was concluded on Saturday. Both the matinee and evening entertainments were well attended, and' on eaoh occasion the programme included a large number of new pictures, all of which tfere much appreciated. The death occurred of Mrs M. Strange at the Masterton Hospital, at 1.30 a.m., ou Saturday morning. Deceased, who was 46 years of age, I was a native of Johnsonville. The funeral will leave her late residence in Dixon Street this afternoon, at 3 o'clock. The gate receipts at the Koyal Agricultural Show, Sydney, amounted to £8,072, exceeding last year's figures by £630. The horse ' Hiawatha cleared a water jump of 31ft Bin—an Australasian record. In the House of Commons, says 1 a London cablegram, Sir Edward Grey, Minister of Foreign Affairs, statod that the negotiations with China did not contemplate any alteration in the Tibetan treaty. Mr J. 0. Boddington, Secretary of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce, has received a telegram from the Secretary of the New Zealand International Exhibition, stating that th 9 time for engaging space for the Wairarapa Court had been extended to May 15th.

The oourt of enquiry into the wreck of the scow Warrior off Oakura, Mr Hutchison, S.M., presiding, with Oaptaiu Hood as asses-* Bor, found that the captain had com* mitted an error of judgment in carrying on a starboard fcack for nine miles. The court acquitted him of negligence, his certificate was returned, and he was ordered to pay the costs of the enquiry.

,The Ghief Justioe at Brisbane has granted the postponed application of Mrs Willis, wife of W. N. Willis, whose name has figured in connection with the New South Wales land enquiry proceedings, for probate of a will as trustee for her son. The Registrar 2 said he had reported the faots of the oase to the Lands Department, and the Minister, after considering them, did not desire to make any representations.

The iJketahuna-Alfredton coach and mail service, of which Mr W. J. Harding is the proprietor, is carried on daily between the two townships, leaviag Alfredton -for Eketahuna at 9.30 a.m. and returning from Eketahuna 2.30 p.m. In addition to the ooaching services Mr Harding is engaged in the carrying business and tradesmen aud settlers may rely on prompt delivery of all goods and parcels entrusted to Mr Harding. King Edward and Queen Alexandra have reached Naples after a rough passage. The Banking Currency Committee at New York, has recommended Congress to permit Government foods to be deposited in national bankß without security at 2 per cent. The committee declares that the sab-Treasuries' interference with banking business has proved a curse to commerce. At Sydney, on Friday. Mr Carruthers, promised a deputation from the Maritime Union that he would appoint inspectors to deal with sanitation on ships and .the aooommoda tion for seamen and firemen. The deputation complained that on some of the vessels which came to Sydney the crews were treated more like pigs than men. As an Indication of the value of the Waikuia district as a dredging .area, it is worthy of note that the Master f on dredge won gold during the year amounting to 2,0850z, valued at £8,192, aad distributed in dividend* £4,750, equal to 19s per share. The total yield of gold from this dredge since September, 1904, has realued £14,000, and 34s per £1 share has been returned to shareholders sinoe were commenced.— Otago Daily Times. Steps are being taken to form an Athletic Association, with headauarters at Masterton, to embrace all sports clubs or societies from Weilincton to Woodville. A meeting of delegates will te held in the Club Hotel, Masterton, on Saturday, May 12th, at 2 p.m., for the purpose of farming an Association. It is proposed that when the Association is formed that it shall be affiliated to the New Zealand Athletic Union. "■The committees appointed by the Masterton Borough and County Counoils to deal with the question of repairing the boundary roads between the Borough and County met on Saturday afternoon; There were present:—The Mayor, and Crs J. H. Pauling and W. Morris (Borough Council), and Crs W. J. Welch, W. Harris and J. Morris, jnr. (County Council). After discussing the matter it was to form and metal the old Junction Road on the southern -boundary of the borough; also, to form and metal about 25 chains of the Road, viz., as far as the road is one chain wide. In both oases it was decided that each Council should bear half tne cost of the work.

The police at Carterton are investigating what appears to be an attempt to derail a train on Thursday night when the 7 o'clock up goods train collided with some slip rails placed in the cattle stops at the Matarawa crossing. When the train was pulled up a portion of a rail was found obtruding from the cowcatcher of the engine. The driver oi the 6 o'clook down passenger train states that he passed over an obstruction at the satne spot. It appears that rails were taken from an adjoining fence and a horse in the paddouk liberated. \ saddle was taken from under the fence, and placed on the line. Subsequent investigation revealed the remnants of the slip rails and the halves of the saddle on the track.
