WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. THE TRENTHAM MEETING. •>■ (By Special Reporter).

Tbe Wellington Racing Club opened their Autumn Meeting, on Thursday last, tinder favourable climatio conditions. The diy was an ideal racing one, slightly marred by showers daring the afternoon. Tbe course proper was -in excellent going order, and tbe splendid equipments and improved state of tbe course speak volumes for the club's go-ahead and obliging secretary, Mr A. E. Whyte. The attendance was not' as large as might reasonably be expected at such an important meeting. The handicapper, Mr J. Pollock, managed very successfully to bide the winners and provide good racing, a fact amply demonstrated by tbe good dividends paid. Proceedings opened with tbe First Hurdles, 1% mile, which was won fairly comfortably by Mr J. Frosser's blaok colt Waitarere, from Mr H Brown's ohestnut gelding Hydrant, who ran a really good race. Defoe was a fair third. Tbe next event up for decision was the Waiwetu Handicap, 7 furlongs, in which Polyanthus was soratohed, and which was won easily by Mr F. Douglas's St. I cleverly bandied by tba*; successful light-weight, S. Keid. St. Albert paid tbe handsome dividend of £5 4s. The third race was the Silverstream Hack Handicap, in which tbe Wairarapa mare Wailetbe earned tbe bulk of tbe money, but was never prominent. The winner turned up in Mr K. Patterson's Destruction, who won without au effort from Cavatina, and returned his supporters tbe dividend of £3 9s. After

luntmeon came cue -piece ae insistence," viz, the Thomson Handicap, of 400 so.vs. The defections were as follow:—Olanobattan, Exmoor, Savoury, Czarevna. The field of twelve left to a beautiful start King Billy very soon went to the head of affairs, and led right throughout until beads were turned for home, when several seemed to* be :tbe winner, the most prominent being Solution. Starshoot and A pa. When well into the straight Fred Jones brought Mr G. Banter's horse Mystification with a brilliant run, and simply smothering bis field for pace, went on and won comfortably by three lengths. Apa ran into second place, 'with Polyanthus third. Gold Crown ran a real good race, and bad be not been out out in the back stretch must have been olose up. The Railway Handicap brought a small field, but provided an interesting race. From a beautiful start, Glenowlet was tho first to show in front, and, remaining in that position, won by a clear length from Gawain, who was sent out favourite. Genowlet, coupled with Stronghold, paid the good price of £3 Bs. The jPlunket Nursery Handicap for two-year-olds brought out Mr J. Monk's Conqueror colt William, who, well handled by A. Oliver, made no race of bis field at the "death," and paid the comforting price of £5 19s. ito was seoond, and Mabuta, coming from the baok, ran a good third. Ihe North Island Challenge Stakes was robbed of a great deal ,or its public interest by the scratching of Mr G. G. Stead's Isolt and Cunieform. There were only four stlrters, Mr J. Monk's pair and Sir George Clifford's Stronghold and Clanobattan. The winner, Achilles, was never extended and one could only gaze on him with a colonial's love for a jreat horse. At the present time Achillea is truly a popular public idol, as was proved by his warm reception. The final race for the first day was* the Tianakon Hack Handicap, of six furlongs, in whioh six horses went to the starter's hands, and an excellent race resulted in a clever and deserved win for Mr 1.

Ray's chestnut mare Elfrida, beautifully bandied by Sid Reid, beat the well-backed Hatley. The unlucky , horse of the race was Houyhnhnm, who, although getting well away, appeared to be obstructed on two occasions, and then succeeded in running third. The favourite, Hiro, Was prominent at the five furlongs, and then fell away and, finished last. Considering the attendance, speculation was really brisk, the maohine putting through £1,584 on the double and £12,169 on straight-out events. The winning combination paid £67 16s. In conoluaioo, one could not speak too highly of the magnificent starting of Mr Harry Piper, who sent every field away on even terms, and each, and every effort was highly successful. The-meeting will be continued to-day, when there will, no doubt, be a large attendance from the Wairarapa.
