*'*S f ■ ' If any athletic body ever made remarkable headway in this v Colony it > is the New Zealand Athletic Union, Formed, as the outcome of b conference in Wellington, on December 27th last, the Union has al-" ready under its banner 128 athletic societies in all parts of the' colony, it is quite clear < that if the cash sports societies wish to survive the struggle with' amateurism they must all unite and form Athletic Associ- ' ations under the Union. The Commissioners of the Chriatchurch Exhibition have plaoed the control of cash athletic sports in the handfil' of the New Zealand Athletic Union, ; and that body ,is considering the holding fof with' prizes such ''w have hever before been 'places on 'any New- Zealand' programme. Only - competitors wjbo are registered with Athletic Associations .will be eligible to compete. [Mr Thos Duncan, Vice-President , ; of the Union, informs us that bis. j Executive ;is negotiating for cheap railway and,, boat fares to competitora under Union rules and that the Premiers Of „the, , several /Federal t .States are being approached re " granting free'passes to the Exhibition competitors- from Australia on the" Commonwealth railways to Hehreat seaports ■ while' the' companies are-being asked to grant concession tickets on the journey 'over.
