THE SAN FRANCISCO DISASTER.
ANOTHER SHOOK PELT. THE RELIEF MEASURES. Received April 25, 11.30 a.m. NEW YORK, April 24. Another sharp shook of earthquake was felt at San Francisco last evening. The shock was al9o experienced in Oregon. No harm was done. The San Franoisco iusuranoe authorities estimate that the loss will be £60,000,000 sterling. Of that sum £35,000,000 is covered by insurance. At President Roosevelt's request, General Woodford explained at a New York banquet that the British and other foreign offers were declined because the President wished to show the world that the Americans were able to rise to the occasion and take caro of their own people. DEATHS ESTIMATED BY THE CORONER AT 1,000.
Received April 25, 11.37 p.m. NEW YORK, April 25. The Coroner at San Francisco estimates the deaths in connection with the disaster at about one thousand. PROCESSION IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, April 25. A fairly large crowd gathered at the Post Office Square, to-day, to seethe start of the prooession to tbe Basiu Reserve, organised in connection with the San Francisco Relief Fund. The prooession was made up of men from the warship Pegasus, Permanent Artillery, School Cadets, and Fire Brigade, 560 in all. At the Baßia Reserve speeches were made by the Mayor and Mr Seddon, bespeaking the people's charity for the suffering in San Franoisco. Mr Seddon said that be bad no doubt the oolony would heartily respond to the call for help. It was surprising how many people from New Zealand lived in California. The OEblegram asking for news concerning them was the longest ever sent from New Zealand. It contained 1,800 words, and cost £136. The cablegram reoeived from Mr Spreckles that day Bhowed to whom financial asaiotanoe ahodld be sent, and should be a guide to Mayors in other places. President Roosevelt had not refused New Zealand's offer, r and if he did not reply by to-night they would send the money to the Finance Committee at San Franoisoo. This was the time for action, not for words. During the afternoon tkie ladies armed with collection boxes collected £65. This the, Wellington Fund to £294.
