FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Masterton Friendly Societies' Council was held in the Foresters' Hall last night, there being present—Messrs Thos. Duncan (chairman), J. R. Campbell, A. H. Gardner, P. Smith, S. O'Regan, B. Chapman, W. Candy and P. J. O'Leary. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr Thos. Duncan; Vice-President, Mr P. Smith; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr A. Wise. It was decided to adopt the rules of the Wellington Friendly Societies' Council subject to certain alterations. Circulars were received from the Wellington United Friendly Societies' Council with referenoe to a conference of delegates from the various Districts and' Councils throughout New Zealand, to be held iu Wellington on May 21at, and asking tbat remits for the agenda paper should be sent in. It was decided to appoint Mr Thoa. Duncan as delegate, and to forward the following remits:—(l) That in the opinion of this conference of Friendly Societies it is desirable that there should be an amalgamation of the whole of the various Friendly Societies in New Zealand and that steps be taken to bring about such araalgamaton; (2) that in the opinion ot this conference it is desirable that all Friendly Societies in New Zealand should have a Death Levy Scheme on the same lines as the Druids' scheme. During the discussion that took plaoe on the former remit, it was pointed out that if amalgamation could be brought about there would be a large saving in the working expenses, and it was felt that the benefits to be derived would be about doubled. The meeting adjourned till Wednesday, April 25th, at 7.30 p.m.
