The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Municipal Fire Brigade was held last evening, Captain Jenkins presiding over a large attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Fireman E. Brnggins, D. McCormiok, S. Check, R. B. Church, and A. H. Pickering. The Brigade decided to cooperate with the Band in forming a ladies' committee in couueotiou with the bazaar and exhibition. Mr R. Harding was elected an active member and Messrs F. Holloway, and A. W. Williams honorary members. The formal opening of the new bridge erected for the Eketnhnna County Council, under the direction of Mr Joseph Dawson, over the Makakahi River, at Hamua, is to take place on Friday. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Minister of Public Works, will perform the opening ceremony. Ho will leave Wellington by the express train, aud will reach the bridge from Hukauui between one and two o'clock. The bridge is a combined truss aud suspension bridge, aud a large number of local representatives have been invited, to whom Mr Dawson will explain the various details which he claims to be valuable improvements. Mr W. H. Oruieksbank has for lease 100 acres near Masterton. A notice with reference to an umbrella left at Mr Letbafcy's shop, appears elsewhere. Messrs E. J. This performance ranks as one of the smartest yet performed by any telegraph administration. Two little children, whose home is in Tiaiaru, had a very unpleasant experience recently. It appears that their home is also the home of a small colony of rats, and when asleep in their beds early one morning the two children, whose ages are from six to seven years, were attacked by some of the more daring members of the rodent family. The mother of the children, hearing the little ones screaming, hastened to see what was the matter, and she was horrified to see the rats actually biting the children about the lips and face. It is reported, says tho Christchurch Press, that the State Fire Insurance Department can, boast of having about three millions sterling of insurance on its books, while tho losses up to the present amount to less than a thousand pounds. The export of flax from the port of Auckand for the month of March was a record one, totalling 74,000 bales, amouutiug to 7,000 tons. This, at the average value of the I flax exported, should bo worth approximately £119,000. The Mayor of Carterton, MrJaa. The Government Biologist, Mr T. W. Kirk, has just returned from a visit to Hawke's Bay, where he made an inspection of the Frimiey Canning Factory, near Hastings. He found that good progress bad been made with planting fruit trees in the district, and the area known as the Frimiey orchards, owned by different people, has reached 380 acres, and new plots were being plauted every year. The factory is doing good work, having this season taken in 14.090 cuses of fruit, mostly peaches and pears. It would, as the result turn out 12,000 boxes of preserved goods, of which Mr Kirk was assured there were already orders for 8,000 boxes, some of which had already been executed. At the height of the season—tbe cud of January and early February —the factory employs 120 hands, and it still has half that number actively at work. The Cbristchuroh railway authorities make strong complaints iu regard to the action of the Volunteers who left the Ohristohuroh Railway Station on Thursday oveuing for Balmoral, says tho Press.
