THE EXTENT OF THE PRESENT ERUPTION.
The cnbJe news shows that the extent of country covered by the present eruption is very considerable. It bus even covered Naples a foot deep in ashes. The town of Torre Annunziata bus hud lo be abaudond, and, under snch ciruumstnncee, it is scarcely surprising to learn that the funicular railway and the observatory have been destroyed. The lava appears to be flowing in a southwesterly direction, and approaching in the direction of Pompei. The usual route followed by tourists who visit the crater is to take the.train from Waples blopr the coast of Portici. whence they branch off inland by train until they reaoh .Resina, and the mountain which they asuend by means of the funicular railway. Tliis railway, which haa been destroyed, is a wire-rope railway, was 900 yards loug, and the upper end was 1,280 feet higher than the lower end. The gradient varied from 43 iu 100 to 63 in 100. The descent oi ascent in the train took 12 minutes. "
