A man, named Thomas H. Morri.Bon, caused some attraction in Queen Street, Maaterton, on Thursday afternoon, by his curious oondpot. Ho stopped several persons and enquired if they "know'where Cooper was?" Several times he went into Mr J. Wickens' shop and put the same question to the lady aaistants there. His curious demeanour caußed some uneasiness, and » customer was asked by the ladies to reaiain in the shop for a few minutes. Morrison came into the shop and again asked if "they had seen Coopei?" He was told that "Cooper" was not there, and on being asked to leave the shop, Morrison drew a revolver, which was loaded, and presented it at the customer, who is said to have at, once decamped. Almost at the same time | Constable Heffernan, who had previously been informed of the man's strange behaviour, appeared on the scene, and arrested Morrison. Since the two arrest 3 ma do last week in Chriatoburch by the detectives, no further burglaries have been reported, but the scare appears to be still general, and strict precautions are being taken by householders, especially in the suburbs.

At the inquest at Maryborough on the body of George Herbert Stubbs, who was shot while deerstalking at Pirinoa, a verdict was leturned that deceased met his death through being accidentally shot by P. Hawke, and that no carelessness was shown by Hawke.

Towards the end of last year a scheme was broached for the federation of the whole of the house painters unions in New Zealand. The scheme was favourably received by all the painters' unions except Dunedin. It has now been decided to hold a conference of delegates at Wellington on April 17tb,

The Thames-Harbour Board has granted permission 10 the Taupo Totara Company, a Wellington organisation, about to conduct the export of timber on an extensive scale, to ereot a private wharf at Kopu, near the Thames. It is estimated that tbe wharf will cost £IO,OOO. It is stated that when all the companies are in full swing the export of timber from the Thames, from all sources, will amount to a million feet per week.
