.FINANCE COMMITTEE. Ai.meeting of the Finance Commit- f itee wae held, on Thursday morning. There were present - Cra Welch' i (chair), !>Moi)n3s, Harris* Uuild and Toogo d. The' Treasurer reported as follows: .—General Account, cr., £2,858 18s ;sd; Local Bodies Loan Account, JEl33;6a. Receipts for the month, -j£5,226113s sd. ,lt was deoided that the County Treasurer should be authorised to .payMrA. P. Kawson up to 75 per cent., for the survey of the Horaexwood+Kaiwhata Road.
Account" amounting to £2,389 16s 2d were : passed for payment.
ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting oft the •Council was held in the afternoon. There were present CrsJ W. J. Weloh, .(chairman), W. Harris, D. 'Guild, J. Mortis, jur,, C. Kebbel!, JB. Toogood. Mr.J. Reilly wrote applying to be relieved from charge of the Alfred,ton tollgate at once. It was decided to call applications for the position immediately. Mr Jno. Barr wrote complaining ■of the water coniing in from the .road,and injuring iihis in Raglan Street. ;The writer waited on the Coundil . i\i support of his ■complaint. It was decided to confer with the Engineer as to what oofcld bedonem the matter.
Idr B. Culloty .wrote asking for : an extension of timeffor completing Jbis .metalling con tract on the WanRoad. On the motion of Or vOuild, seconded by*.Cr Toogood, the letter was received!. The Treasurer wrote,advised the of JE969 6a 7d on. account of Government Grants. The Chief Engineer of Roads wrote asking the vOonnoil whether it iiadjany objection to the proposal to .hand over the of the Ruamahunga Suspension 'Bridge on the Mount Bcuce Road to the County, and the apportionment of costs to be oornein .equal parts by the Mauriceviljle and Masterton Counties. The Engineer .stated .that he knew of no serious defect iin .the bridge. It was decided to .accept the con* trol of the bridge .on the terms mentioned and provided the bridge is in a sound condition. The Chief Engineer of Roads wrote granting the Council authority to expend £2s' on repairing the road at the Eparaima Deviation. The Engineer was instructed to expend the amount mentioned in widening the deviation. Mr J. A. Donald wrote drawing the Council's attention to !tbe state of the telephone line on the Masterton- . Gladstone Road. JBe had had one nccident at harvest time, and there was a danger of the same thing happening again if the wires were left so low. The Clerk was instructed to write to the promoters of the line Etating that there was a heavy sag in the wire at the locality mentioned, and asking tbem to take the accessary steps to remedy the matter, otherwise the Council would do the work at their expense. The Treasury advised that the loan of ££so for Mount JBaker Road metalling was available, also, £2OO for the flat Bash Road, £450 for Wiltpn'e Bridge loah, £250 for the Waipopa Bridge, £I,OOO for the Wangaehu Road, also, £3OO for the Oaks Estate Loan. A oomplaint was reueived from Mr T. W. Waxdell to the effect that traction engine drivers blocked > traffic when the boilers were being filled with water from creeks on public roads. The traffio on the roads was frequently blocked as long as a quarter of aq hoar. The letter wbb received, and it was decided that when, the by-laws were under revision the matter would receive attention.
A letter was received from Mr G. Q. Gork, on behalf of the owners, asking that the,loan ol' £3OO for road •' metalling in the Oaks Estate, now available, should be obtained from jthe Treasury 9 and the work pat in hand at once, it was decided to accede to thu request. Mr L. Garratt wrote notifying that he had relinquished occupation of the Taueru Toll House, since March Ist. An application was made by Mr F. O. Johanson to lease the cottage. The Council decided that it coold not see its way to lease the cottage at present. Mr W. B. Green wrote drawing the attention to the dangerous condition of the Waiboki Bridge (Waterfalls). The Engineer was instructed to uttend to the work. MrR. Brown, Town, Clerk, waited on the Council, and bruught uuder their notice the state of the old Junction Road along the southern boundary of the borough, and asked the Council to appoint a committee to confer with e( com , mittee from the Borough Council to see what could be done. A petitioa was received from a number of settlers on the boundary road also asking the Council to take steps to remedy the state of the road. Cr Morris, Harris and Welch were appointed to meet a committee from tue Borough Council, and with power to ant| in connection With i the Junction Road, at Manaia; also, to attend to the Road Mr D. A. Moiton and A. fl. Johnstone interviewed the Council, on behalf of the Lanadowne Water Supply Committee, and asked the Council to take the necessary ste{is to take a poll of the settlers for the raising of a £3,000 loan for supplying Lanadowne with water. The deputation suggested that the work b® gone on with at once to enable the settlers to have the water by next summer. The Clerk was authorised to write to the Treasury asking if the money oould be raised, aftejrjwhich ■ the residents would be required to give a guarantee to the Council ts> bear the costs of the poll in the event of the proposal not being carried. J. Johnston, of Weraiti, waited on the Council in support of p letter in which he complained that the Weraitißoad, at the portion near his property, was practically jmpaseable for traffic in winter. In
order to amend the stßte of affairs he stated that he would be prepared to do the hauling for metalliQß|3o ch&iuß of the roadat a depth of eight inches and nine feet wide, on condition that the Council would spread ithe metal. The matter was lelt in the hands of Or Morris, the member for the riding, and the E ngintex, I interview the other settlers interested in the work and make arrangements accordingly. On the motion of Cr Toogood, seconded by the Chairman, it was decided to enforce the heavy traffic by-iaw, on all the roads in the Wainuioru Biding, north of the Taueru Bridge, from May lft to September 30th, and to notify the Inspectors accordingly. The question of obtaining a movable whare for the Opaki .Hiding waß left in the Jbandß of the members for tha riding, Crs Welch and Harris, and the Engineer to report. The Council confirmed a special order, which had already been passed, declaring "broom" to be a noxious weed within tbe County.
