EAST COAST NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent), Dipping operations- last month were suspended for a'time owinc to the unusual amount of rain which fell, but, fortunately, the weather cleared up towards the end of the month and allowed settlers to finish dipping within the time limit fixed by the Stock Act. A fair amount of road work has been done to our arterinl roads this autumn, and some of tho timber has been delivered on the ground for building a bridge across the Mangipakeba stream, near Birkett's. By the way, while referring to road matters, 1 notice that the Masterton County Council have let the contract to fence the deviation between Kohiwai and Riversdale. Did not the County Council last winter have to grant the contractor who carted the posts and wire a special permit to take heavy loads on our roads? So urgent and absolutely necessary was this work, and the fence is being erected now! Truly we have some erratic Councillors!

Several of our local sportsmen have secured good stag's beads this year. The deer are fairly plentiful on many places along the Bast Coast. The annual rifle match between the Whakataki and Whareama Rifle Clubs was fired at Blairlogie butts last Saturday, 7th inst., and resulted in a win for the Whibataki team by 25 points. A team of eight men represented each club. The day was dull with a double wind crossing the range, which considerably baffled the shooters. The distances were 200 yds, 500 yds, and 600 yds, seven shots at each distance. At the conclusion of the match, Mr J. McLeay, on behalf of the visiting team, expressed entire satisfaction at the enjoyable day's outing, and the quality and quantity of the luncheon and afternoon tea provided by the home team, and asked the Whareama team, in a jocular way, when ready to lire the return match, not to go to Tinui, but to just let them know and the Whakataki team would avail themselves of a second visit. The following were the scores:— WHAKATAKI."
