D. J. Murray intends to spend a few days holiday Qt Christchurch before taking up his duties at Mortiington (Duuedin). Mr and Mrs Murray will leave Masterton to-morrow. At Wirth's circus a young lioness attacked Captain Burrows, her trainer, in the cage, and lacerated his leg, states a Sydney cablegram. The animal had to be shot to enable Burrows to ecsape. The deceased, who was the eldest son of the late Mr J. C. Vallance, had resided at Oamaru for some years. The body will be brought to Maatertou for interment. The funeral Will take at 2 o'clock, to-morrow. A telegram from Ohristchuroh, last evening,'stated that the Premier visited Rangiora, yesterday, and reoeived a number of deputations. He delivered a political speech, in which he dealt with the results of the financial year just closed, and quoted figures to Show that the sur» plus for the year amounted to £775,000. Mr F. Staples advertises for sale a quantity of potatoes. The poundkeeper advertises particulars of a bay gelding, impounded from the Opaki Racecourse. In addition to the sale of four farms, on aocount of Messrs McGregor Bros, on Saturday next, Mr W. B, Ohennells will submit at auution the farm property, at Taratahi, at present in the occupation of Mr R. Daysh, and part of the estate of the late idr W. B. Buick. The property contains 151 % acres, and the present lease will expire on May Ist next. The whole of the land, which is plougnable, is thoroughly well watered, and is within two miles of the Taratahi Dairy Faotory. Particulars and terms of sale can be obtained from Mr Ohennells. The outbreak was promptly extinguished by the crew. The fire originated in some hemp, which had beeu shipped at Auckland. About eight bales were charred, and twonty-eigbt bales were damaged by the water. '* Persons in the vicinity of Bannister Street, about 10.45 o'clock las t night, were startled to hear the Teport of a revolver. Constable Kyle, wbo was on duty in Que*n Street, heard the report, nnd having been informed who discharged the revolver, followed the man and arrested bim at a house in Banuister Street. He gave his name as Arthur Poison, and it is alleged that he bad uttered a threat to shoot his wife. The accused had been on a visit to Wellington for a few weeks, and only returned to Masterton yesterday. When arrested a five-chambered revolver was found in his possession. One of the chambers had been discharged. He will appear at the Magistrate's Court, this morning, and will probably be oharged with having discharged < firearms in a public place, and drunkenness.
