r Experienced gold prospectors are at present at work ou the higher ranges of Mount Egmont. Samples have been forwarded to the Government Geological Department. The High Court has decided that the Victorian Full Court has no jurisdiction to inquire into the validity of a patent granted by the New South Wales Patent Office. The application of A. Ross, of Masterton, to be re-instated as an amateur, has been granted by the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Fraser, who fell off the late express , near Seaoliff, on Thursday night, was a seaman off the Karitane, aud had left the vessel at Wellington. His arm has been amputated and he is progressing favourably at the Hospital. Early in Maroh last, the Masterton police commenced a campaign against oyclists for riding on the footpaths or without lihgts at night withn the borough. Up to the present 24 defaulters have been brought before the Magistrate, and there are now 10 cases pending. On Saturday night the names of Ave cyclists and three drivers of vehicles were taken for driving without lights and these defaulters will duly make their appearance before the Magistrate. The morning and evening services at the Masterton Presbyterian Church, yesterday, were conducted by the Rev. A. Miller, M.A., of Sydney. At the morning service a choir of children, under Mr R. J. Yoaug, sang a number of special anthems. In the afternoon the annual prize distribution to the children attending the Sunday School took place, and the Rev. A. Millar delivered a short address. The advocates of a tram service for Wanganuijfpoint out that Invercargill, with £a smaller and more scattered population, has a horse tram system which pays. A cablegram from Rookhampton (Queensland), last evening, stated that two cases of suspeoted plague have been reported, and has terininted fatally. A Dunedia telegram states that the weather continues cold and wet, and the prospects of a late harvest are not improving. Though there have been so many wet days, the total rainfall for the year to date is olny 7.665 inches. A man named Harry Lawson was killed by a train near the Oarisbrook cricket ground. Dunedin, on Friday night. lie was crossing the line at the level crossing leading towards the orioket ground when he was struck by the engine, and probably killed at once. He was about 60 years of age. On Friday the Court of Appeal at Wellington concluded the hearing of the case, Fels and another v. Rnowles and Hales, which concerns an application on behalf of trustees to be relieved from an undertaking to sell the property ! whereon stands the Dresden Piano Company's premises. Judgment was reserved. The matter is one affecting the working of the Arbitration laws throughout the oolony, and the decision of the Appeal Court will : be awaited with much interest. Mr W. B. ' The tests registered at the various creameries of the Masterton Cooperative Dairy Company, Limited, for the past month, are as follow: Rangitumau, lowest 4, highest 4.8, average 4.3; Nikau, lowest 4, highest 4.6, average 4.2; Mangamalre, lowest 3.8, highest 4.6, average 4.1. The suppliers' accounts for the month amounted to £I,OBB 2s 6d, and the amount of butter fat received was 29,040*51b5. The largest cheque to be paid to one supplier is £56 7s 6d. A cablegram from Constantinople states that four men have been sentenced to death for the murder of Redvan Pasha. The horse Fraeland, which was to have competed at the Rfcefton Raoes, on Saturday, was stabbed tbrougb the foreleg ou Fri'lay night. Someone broke the padlook and entered tbe stable. The injury prevented Freeland running at the races. i A series of burglaries were committed at JPaloierstan .North, on Friday night, live business places in and near tbe Square being entered. Evans and Co., butchers, lost .£5 from tbe till, and clothing valued at £8 was taken from W. J. May, tailor. There has been an alarming increase of rabbits in tbe King Country, and at a tnunting of over a hundred farmers bald at Kibikibi last week, it was resolved to request the Government to take steps to assist settlers in the destruction of tbe rabbits. , It is said that there is an embryo strike on at the Bluff among tbe oystermen. Tbe men made a demand for an increase of .ts per 100 dozen, and many have left beoause the demand was not acceded to. The price paid at present is 8s per 10p dozen.—'Southland Times. The white workers . now say that their wages must bo doubled. If tbia is done, a large increase in the State subsidy will be necessary. Sir William Steward was in s combative Bfmood, at Timaru, on Wednesday night, and in tbe oourse of his remarks at tbe Railway Servants' banquet, managed to ventilate a long series of grievances. He objected violently, says the Lyttelton Times, to the Premier's eulogium of the railway services, and Informed a thunder-struck audience that tbe Government bad absolutely refused to stop a train at a small station in his district. He ' also mentioned the grievance of some abeep which were nnable to get slaughtered on the day tbey were trucked, touobed upon the shortage of railway stock, and accused the Government of neglecting South Canterbury generally. Then he oharged the Minister of Public Works with having wronged Timaru in allowing the Drainage Bill promoted by the Borough Council to pass, demanded a new railway station at Waimate, and waxed indignant about the Government's neglect of "What about that bridge?" asked the Premier, apparently unwilling that anything should be missed.
