A MISSING MILLIONAIRE.

WHERE IS JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER.

AVOIDING A SUBPOENA

Despite the frantio efforts of the reporters, to track Mr Rookefeller, who vanished in December, when subpoenas were issued requiring him to give evidence in the case brought against the Standard Oil Company by the State of Missouri, the millionaire's whereabouts are still utterly unknown. Reports are constantly pouring in asserting that he has been seen in various plaaes—aruising in the West Indies, hiding in his oouLtry-house at Lakewoed, disguised as a sailor at Savannah, and so on. His, houses in New York and the Pocantioo Hills are continually watched. Humourous newspaper cartoons depict Mr Rockefeller, the ridhest man in the world, assuming all sorts of disguses to escape detection. In startling headlines the sensational newspapers proclaim him a fugitive from justice. REPORTED IN NAPLES. Rome, February 16. William Rockefeller, who lefc Rome on Tuesday of this week for Naples, is expected to return to Rome on Saturday evening. It is stated In Naples that John D. Rockefeller reached that plaoe on Thursday on board the Ham-burg-Amerioan line steamer Deutsohand. The report has not been verified. HIS WHEREABOUTS SETTLED. New York, February >2B.—lnformation, which has come to Henry Wollman, special representative of Attorney-General Hadley, of Missouri, settles the question' of the whereabouts of John D. Rockefeller, head of the Standard Oil Company, for whom the subpoena servers have be9n diligently searching for several weeks. Mr Rockefeller is snugly hidden in his country house at Pooantioo, New York, Although the representative of the Missouri authorities is certain that the man whose testimony in the Standard Oil hearing is most desired is within a few miles of this city, and has been there ever sinoe the subpoena for his appearanoe was Issued, he is powerless to pr.oduoe him before Commissioner Sanborn. Mr Wollman said, yesterday, that Mr Rookefeller had on several occasions taken advantage of the law wbiob prevents the servioe of subpoenas on Sunday and has attended obarch and taken outdoor exercise. Lack of funds to pay detectives possessing sufficient cleverness to get within serving distance of Mr Rockefeller is what has prevented the Missouri State Department from placing the president of the Standard Oil Company in the witness box. Mr Wollman said if he bad ten good men at his oommand he could produce this .important witness eventually. It might take a week or three weeks, he said, but enough : men and enough money oould accomplish ,the desired result. Mr Wollman has learned that when Mr Rockefeller's presence before Commissioner Sanborn was first oalled for he was at bis home at No. 4, West, Fifty-Fourth; Street, and remained there while the hunt for >1 bUuHias hottest. Ignorance of thw J fact that Mr Rookefeller had free passage way from his home into Fifty - Third Street through the home of his son-in-law,. which is directly baok of bis own home, was the reason the subpoena servers failed to perform their duty.
