The "Sydney Thousand" resulted:— Arust (New Zealand) ... 1 Rutt (Germany) ... 2 Payne (Sydney) ... 3 A MAGNIFICENT RACE. FINEST EVER WITNESSED 'ON THE GROUND. Received March 23,..1.9 a.m. SYDNEY, Maroh 23. The weather was fine, and the ground in good condition. There were 35,000 people present. Arnst started off the 75 yards mark, and Payne off the 90 yards mark. There were eleven starters in all. The back markers were Rutt (Germany), Meyer (Gem any) and Clark (Victoria). Rutt and Meyer made the pace terrific, and overhauled the front bunch when a lap and a quarter had been negotiated. From thence to the last lap a great struggle ensued, Rutt gradually improving his position. Arnat led into the last lap, and keeping up a splendid sprint throughout, beat Rutt, who ran into second place at the members' stand, getting home by three parts of a wheel, amidst tremendous enthusiasm. The cheering lasted several minutes. The winner was carried sho,ulder high. The race was the finest ever witnessed on the ground. Time, lmia 54 3-ssec. The race w<ts run against a stiff breeze.
