THE PACIFIC CABLE.

STATEMENT BY THE MANAGER. Received March 22, 8.54 a.m. BRISBANE, March 22. Mr Reynolds, General Manager of the Pacific Cable Company, states that it is understood there is no intention on the part of the Board to indulge in a rate war. There had been a considerable expansion of business lately, principally in oonsequenoe of the spurt in the wheat trade, and he was sent out by the Board to obtain better facilities for the cable, and to inspect the stations, including those at Norfolk Island and Doubtless Bay. He will afterwaids interview the New Zealand Government and then return to Melbourne. A statement had been made about the sale of Fanning Island which was not accurate. The island would remain under British rule. The Colonial. Office and the Canadian and Commonwealth Governments were alive to the necessity of this. If portions of the is'.and were sold it would be done subject to British territorial rights. The Pacific Company has a long lease of the ground on which the station is built, and it would not be affeoted.
