Colonel Mackenzie has fined the Umzinto ohieftain and his tribe fifteen hundred cattle, and confiscated their shields and assegais. The presence of the military has greatly improved the native demeanour. WAR COMPENSATION COMMISSION. EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND CLAIMS EXAMINED. Received March 22, 9.43 p.m. CAPETOWN, March 22. The Transvaal War Compensation Commission has examined eightyfive thousand claims, aggregating in all to £62,000,000, besides £2,500,000 for military receipts. Of the £9,500.000 provided oy the Imperial Government for the settlement of olaims, £5,000,000 has been allotted to the Orange Colony, and ; the balance to the Transvaal.
