GERMANY'S COLONIAL WAR. ESCAPE OP REBELS. Received March 22, 8.30 a.m. ' BERLIN, March 21. The chief Morenga and his fol* lowers in German South-West Africa escaped and fled northwards, after a sharp fight with the German troops. Colonel Deimling, speaking in the Reichstag, deolared that the troops in South-West Africa w.ere tied to their base, and only two thousand were available against Morenga and Bondelzwarts. He added that it was impossible to suppress the Hottentots without building a railway to Keetmanshoep. NATIVE DISTURBANCE. SIX CHIEFS IMPRISONED. Received March 22, 8.45 a.m. CAPETOWN, March 21. A court-martial at lxopo sentenced six chiefs of Mokufelio's followers to death for taking arms against the King, but the sentence was commuted to ten and seven years' imprisonment, in addition to fines. Colonel Mackenzie has fined the Umzinto ohieftain and his tribe fifteen hundred cattle, and confiscated their shields and assegais. The presence of the military has greatly improved the native demeanour. WAR COMPENSATION COMMISSION. EIGHTY-FIVE THOUSAND CLAIMS EXAMINED. Received March 22, 9.43 p.m. CAPETOWN, March 22. The Transvaal War Compensation Commission has examined eightyfive thousand claims, aggregating in all to £62,000,000, besides £2,500,000 for military receipts. Of the £9,500.000 provided oy the Imperial Government for the settlement of olaims, £5,000,000 has been allotted to the Orange Colony, and ; the balance to the Transvaal.
