' MASTERTON.

There has been a great deal of wet unseasonable weather experienced throughout; this district, during the period. This has caused an almoat complete stoppage of all harvesting work curtailing the earnings and consequently the spending power of a considerable number of men. It has also caused great loss to farmers, the drain in stook iu many instances starting to shoot before it could be threshed. Business in general may be said to be fairly good; there are some complaints of slackness, but in the majority of oases tradespeople are satisfied. Building trades: Quite a number of buildings of various kinds are in course of erection. Carpenters and joiners have been busy during 'the month. Paintors and decorators fairly busy; tradesmen fully employed, except for time lost owing to wet weather. Plumbers, fully employed. Engineering trades: The improvement reported the last two or three months has beeu. maintained, and there is every promise of it continuing. Local tradesmen fully employed during the month. Tailoring trade: About an average for this season. Some faotoriea are busy, and increasing their hands. Furniture trades: Fairly good in a bianohes. Cement-pipe making: Brisk; a good number of orders on band. Limekilns: Busy. Plenty of work in hand. Retail trades (general): A fair average trade is reported. The wet weather has undoubtedly affeoted business during the month, and it anticipated by some business people that the loss to farmers through spoilt crops, etc., will materially affect trade during pext month. Labour: A large number of men have been waiting about for har-vesting-work, which will be pushed on as soon as the weather settles. There are apparently plenty of men available at present for labouring work in this district. Ten men were sent 10 Government and private employment during the month. GREYTOWN NORTH. Building trades: Slack at present. Clothing trade (factories): Fairly busy. Retail trade (general): Good; up* to the usual standard. Unskilled labour: Looal labour fully employed. The long spell of wet weather is retarding the harvest, and men are making poor wages in consequence.
