OBITUARY.
MI! JOSEPH BAKNES. The death occurred, yesterday, at his residence, Victoria Street, Maaterton, of Mr Joseph Barnes, for the past twenty three years a respected resident of this town. Deceased had been ailing for some time, and his death was not unexpected. Mr Barnes, who was 75 years of age, came to the colony in October, 1883 in the ship "Oxford," landing at Wellington. The "Oxford" Jeft England in January, but went ashore and the passengers, including Mr Barnes returned to England. Some months after the "Oxford" was re. floated, and deceased came on to New Zealand with her. Almost direotly after arriving in Wellington, deceased came to Masterton, where he resided ever since. Three daughters (Mesdames B. Welch, P. Felliagham,and Miss AlioeD. Barnes)and two sons (Messrs Thamaa and John Barnes) are left to mourn their loss. The funeral, whioh will take place to-day, will be a private one.
