A CHARACTERISTIC OFFER.
DECLINED WITH WARMEST THANKS. NEW PLYMOUTH, March 12. Whilst the Premier was in Auckland, the New Zealand Government offered to place the steamer Tutane* kai at the disposal of the French Government, and the French Gonstfl at Auckland, to proceed to Tahiti with foodstuffs, and any other assistance that it might be dpsired to give the natives, who suffered by the recent disaster. At New Plymouth, the Premier stated that he had received a telegram from the Frenoh Consul, at Auckland, tendering the warmest thanks on behalf of the French Government for the kind 'offer, and stating that it bad been ascertained that the condition of the Tahiti natives was not as bad as had been reported, so any special assistance was not necessary.
