CHARLES HOLLOWAY COMPANY.
"THE ROGUES OF THE TURF."
The Charles Holloway Dramatic Company concluded their Masterton season in the Town Hall, on Saturday evening, when they staged Max Goldberg's sporting drama "The Rogues of the Turf." The audience was a lirge one, and the interested manner in which it watched the plot being unravelled, showed that the piece was suited to the popular taste. The whole plot revolves on the running • of the Manchester Cup, and in connection with this event there are the usual underhand attempts to nobble the favourite, and drug the jockey so frequently seen on the melodramatic stage. The piece was excellently staged, the running of the Manchester Cup being depioted iu a vivid manner, while the unusual sight of seeing; a horse on the stage, in'Masterton, added greatly to the general effect. The oaste was a very strong one, and' perhaps the best seen on the dramatio stage in Masterton. As "Joe Flaxmau," the old trainer, Mr Ohas. Holloway stood out prominently, and bis interpretation of the part, on Saturday evening, showed that be had lost aone of his talent. His aoting was loudly applauded, especially in the scene in which be describes the. race for the Cup. Though she had not as much scope in which to display her powers, as on the pre vious evening,- Miss Beatrice Holloway, as Nellie Flaxman, proved herself a charming aotress, and her bright and wiusome manner on Saturday night made ber a favourite with the audience. Mr Robert Inman executed the role of "Arthur rfomerton" in his usual' capable manner, and the "Captain Dudley of. Mr Godfrey Cass left littlo to be described. As "Mr Solomons'" Mr J. P. O'Neill kept the audience in a delighted mood, and his frequent threats "to leave the firm" were met with roars of laughter. Mr Wilton Welch acted the part of "Sam Flaxman" successfully, as did Miss Alice Deorwyn, as "Phyllis Wurzell." The aoting of Miss Ethel Appleton, in the role of "Marion," with a striug of aliases, was a treat to witness. The other mjnor parts were entirely satisfactory. The Company will open a season in Wellington this evening.
