On Thursday an oil launch with 1 the name "Advance," 27ft by 40ft, fitted with a flve-hb-rse power standard engine, was found in an abandoned condition at Waibi Point, Queen Charlotte Sound, Evidently a mishap has occurred, and it is feared there might have,been loss of life. A launoh of similar description was seen to pass Raveuscliffe \ on Wednesday during a strong gale. The only documents on board are in Italian, and the launoh was evidently engaged iu the fishing trade. The concert whioh is to be given in the Town Hall, on St. Patrick's night, promises to be as sucoaessful as any of the many entertainments of a similar nature that havo been held here. Irish national songs, music, and dances will form the principal part of the programme. Several of the performers are already well and favourably known in Masterton, while Mrs Komber and the Misses Van Stavern, Segrief, and Farrell, who are coming from Wellington for the occasion, are ranked amongst the best lady singers of the Empire City. Harry Hall will give some of his inimitable sketahes, which in themselves should be sufficient to ensure a large attendance. The box plan is now open at Miss Rive's, and those who have purobased dress circle tiokets oan have their seats reserved there. There were 2,906 acres under broom millet in New South Wales last year, and the value of the crop was nearly £30,000. Yesterday was an ideal summer's day, and a large crowd were attracted to the Park, where the Masterton Municipal Brass Band rendered several appreciative selections during the aftornoon. A man, named Jack Ryan, poisoned himself at Ilealey's board-ing-house, Taihape, early on Saturday morning. A letter left addressed to bis sister showed that the aot was premeditated. A strong deputation will wait on the Borough Council, at their meeting, to-morrow eveuing, to urge tha Council to prohibit a publioan's booth being allowed .on the Park Oval at sporta meetings. The subpoena calling unon Mr Rockefeller to testify at the antiTrust Commission in New York has been abandoned, the Oil Trust offl • oials having arranged to give evidence. At a meeting of botelkeepers held in Brisbane a resolution was adopted bindiing those present to eutirely close thetr hotels on Sunday, which would moan that even travellers would not be served. Mr T. S. We3ton, of Wellington, has been appointed by the New Zealand University aa Examiner for 1906 in Commercial Law and Industrial Law (Bachelor of Commerce). General Booth, appaking on the unemployed problem, nt Leeds, said he saw no difference between sending a mnn to work from Edinburgh to Bristol to sending him from Leeds to Toronto. He hopes to make bis army a million strong. Over Ave hundred signatures have been obtained for the petiton to the Government to have a State coal depot established at Masterton, and the petition will now bo forwarded to the Minister of Mines by Mr A. W. Hogg, M.H.R. The Rev. J. Kennedy Elliott, of Wellington, who is acting as Moderator of Masterton. conducted the morning and evening services at the Masterton Presbyteriaa Churoh yesterday. Both services were well attended; In speaking to a reporter at Christohurch, ou Saturday, Mr R. Allen, one of the Executive Oommisaioners of the -New Zealand International Exhibition, gave an emphatic denial to the statements made that the correspondence in connection with the Exhibition was not promptly attended to. The highest totals in connection with the Now Zealand Egg-laying Competition, for the past week, were: Jonathan Hodson's White Leghorns 29, Miss MoCallum's White Leghorns 29, Mrs Griffiths' Silver Wyandottes 26. In the grand total H. Leger (Levin) ia leading with 1,277, Brooke, of South Australia, next with 1,132, Marlborough A. and P. Association 1,130, and Jonathan Hodsou 1,117. The privileges in connection with the Masterton Racing Club's autumn meeting, sold by Mr J. R, Niool, on Saturday last, realised satisfactory prices.
