A letter was received by the Masterton County Council at its meeting, yesterday, from the Chief Engineer of Roads, informing the Council that should the tenders for tbo work of making a bridge over the Taueru River, at Glendonald, reach the estimated cost, the request of the Council to have the Government subsidy increased to £433 6s Bd, would receive consideration. The friends of Mr and Mrs J. J. Guest will be pleased to learn that Mr Guest has received well-deserved promotion, having been appointed to take charge of the school at Te One, on Chatham Island. Mr Guest will leave for his new sphere of duties n'ooufc the middle of next month. When Mr (Juest first took charge of the Te Ore Ore Sohool, nine years ago, the average attendance was about 19, but it is now over 50, and at one time rose as high as 100. The Chatham Island School is not managed by any Education Board, but is directly under the oontrol of ,the i Minister for Eduoation. At a meeting of delegates from athletic clubs of South Canterbury heldatTimam recently Mr W.Gunn, president of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society, occupied the ohair. Mr J. Kennedy, Geraldine, a member of the Executive of the New Zeal aud Athletic Union, laid before the meeting the proposals and rules of theUniun. A discussion ensued daring which all the sneakers expressed themselves in favour of having a body to control professional athletics. Mr Gunn said the Otago Caledonian Society had determined not to affiliate with any athletic union having its headquarters in Wellington, and the South Canterbury Society was going to fall in with Otago. He was strongly of opinion that a centre to control South Canterbury cash athletios was necessary. It was ultimately decided, on the motion of Messrs Moriarty and Kennedy, to form a South Canterbury Athletic Centre, to include all olubs between Rakaia and the Waitaki rive r s. Mr J. P.
