MELBOURNE v. WELLINGTON

By Telegraph—Press Association.

WELLINGTON, February 2G

The third day's play in the Wellington v. Melbourne Club contest was marked by ouo of the most exciting and brilliant finishes recorded in the jamais of local cricket, the visitors gaining a bandcome victory on the stroke of time by seven wickets.

A strong j southerly breeze was somewhat discomfiting to the play.orw, particularly for tho Victorians. Contrary to expectation, the wicket played capitally throughout the afternoon's proceedings, but the outfield suffered to some extent by yesterday's heavy rain, and was on the dead side.

Wellington's second innings realised the respectable score of 330. J. P. Blaoklock led the way with 97-the outcome of forceful battinsr, in which hard clean and crisp driving predominated. He gave only one real chance. Tucker, whose con trlbuiion was 33, executed some artistic late cutting. Hickson, who was at the wickets for just on two hoars for his 39 runs, played, steadily, and took no risks. Barron

played stylishly for 21, and Mona ghau confidently and soundly for 19, and was unbeaten wbon the innings closed. Laver was the most success ful bowler for the visitors, his three wickets being obtained at the expense of 23 runs. Armstrong captured five for 95, and McLtoi one for 105. The fielding was again poor, mistakes being made with monotonous regularity.

Wanting 108 runs to win in the 47 minutes left for play Armstrong and Mailer began oDnrations for the visitois and runs came freely from tLe jump. The Australian champion gave a flue exhibition of magnificent hitting all round the wicket, and his efforts were almost wholly responsible for the splendid seven-wicket victory achieved by bis side, Aitken making the winning hit just on the stroke of the clock. " Armstrong's contribution, was 66, and Aitken'a 21. both being not out Mailer made 20, Vaugban 2, and ilenty 1, the two latter batsmen being run out in their eagerness to force the pace. Mon«gban's one wicket (Mailer) cost him 51 runs. The spectators accorded Armstrong a Great ovatiun for his magnificent innings.
