Previously it was impossible to obtain this information without inquiry, and the new ar ought t(/be of great convenienoe to the general public It is the invention of a departmental officer, Mr A, J. Clecg, of Havvera. •who has been in Palmerston for the past few days setting up the instrument, which is known as an indicator. It has been fixed just over the posting boxes, aud the oort that is visible to the rnablio consists of a circular cord bearing the information that the next one closes at a •certain time. Toe mails are grouped under various letters of the alphabet, and reference to a card alongside the disc shows which group of mails have closed and which will close next. Other information as to the ■rates of postage and the dates of closing of the 'Frisco and Australian mails are also displayed. Jhe mechanism inside is very simple. The operator has only to turn a handle and the required notice is displayed. The turning of the hardle at the same time rings a bell, and this enableß the officer in charge of the mail room to check the clearances of the posting boxes, and «ee that they are not cleared before the specified hour. An instrument of a similar nature has also been placed In the private box room to indioate when the incoming mails are sorted. It also bears much valuable information for the nonvenience of the pubiio, and will no doubt be fully appreciated. Similar indicators have been in use at Hawera for the last six months, and have given every satisfaction. Palmerston.is the only other office in the oolony to have one of those instruments, the Government having decided to give the invention a thorough trial here before equipping all poßt offices with them.
