MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly meeting of tbe Masterton School Committee was held last evening. The members present were:—Rev. D. J. Murray (.chair), fl. Q'Leary, E. Pragnell, G. Townsend, W. A. Fendall, HJ. H. Waddington, J. Carpenter. The Treasurer reported a credit balance of £7B 2s 4d, a cheque since drawn reducing the amount to £76 9s. Tbe liabilities which are not yet definitely known, are expeoted to exceed that amount. The Trust Lands Trust notified that they would inform the committee when there was a cottage belonging to the Trust vacant for the purpose of a custodian's cottage. The Trust Lands Trust, also, notified that tbe sum of £22 10s, the second half-yearly grant to the committee had been forwarded to the Education Board. The Secretary reported that it had not yet been placed to tbe committee's credit.

The Education Board wrote asking whether the committee would accept Miss Clarke on tbe teaching staff of thesohool. Miss Clarke, who is at present at the Greytowu Sohotil, has passed the Junior Civil Service examination, and has had two years' experience. The Secretary reported chat the Chairman (Mr K. Brown) bad wired to the Board accepting the services of Miss Clarke, s. The Headmaster's report was read as follows: Attendance: Main School, 654; Side School, 171; Secondary Classs, 76. The school reopened on Monday last with a very satisfactory attendance of pupils and a full staff. Since the holiday 52 new pupils have been admitted, 37 of them into tbe primary department at the Main School, two into the Secundary Classes, and 13 into the Side School department. To supply the vacancies caused by the retirement of the four pupil-tea-chers, whose term of service has expired, two transfers have been made by the Board, and two positions have still to be filled. I understand the recommendation of the committee in connection with the proposal to asphalt the new paths has been agreed to by the Board,, but no definite arrangements have been made for the work to be done. No bicycle accommodation is available for teachers' cycles, and the shelter provided for boys' cycles is quite inadequate. I should be glad if the committee would take into consideration the question of providing additional shelters. I should be glad if the committee will make arrangements for the winter's supply of firewood and coal. The latter will be required for the new rooms.

The visiting members were instructed to have the work of more bicycle accommodation at the school put in hand, and the matter of a winter supply of firewood was left to the Secretary. The question of asphalting at the Side School was left in the hands of Messrs O'Leary and Waddington. The visiting. members are Messrs Brown, Carpenter and Pendall. Accounts amounting to £l4 2s 4d were passed for payment.
