TINUI, February 6. The first polo match ever seeu iu the district was played here last Saturday between teams from Mataikonn and Tinui, and was won by the former, the scores being four goals to 1". R. Barton, P. Matthews, W. Graham, and J. Potangaroa played well for Mataikona, and H. Morrison, R. Morrison, E. Huttou and Dr Hunter for Tinui. The sky wf<s oveicast all day, and rain started to fall at the flui9h of the game; bu*, the threatening weather did not seem to make any difference to the attendance of visitors, as a very large crowd of interested spectators travelled long distances to witness a game tbit very few peoDle here had ever seen. The game was played in a pretty paddock, surrounded with plantation, and the ground was put iu splendid order by Dr Hunter, who is the principal mover iD introducing the game here and is deserving of a special word of praise. Tbe ponies are a tiretclaas lot, and appeared to take a keen interest in the game. Some clever work was done on both sides, but P. Matthews was the pick of the players, the clover way ,»u which he got the ball away from the bunch of players aud then took it down the Held at full gatlop bringing rounds of applause from the unlookers. Afternoon tea was partaken of under the willow trees, add was supplied by the following ladies:— Mesdames J. S. Langdon, A. B. IVi-holis, J. Johnston, W. H. Brooks, and W. H. Ferens (Dunedin). Mr W. 11. Brooks was referee, aud his decisions gave general satisfaction. A return match will be played next Saturday at Whakataki.
