The Pahiatua Catholio Convent School was opened on Monday with an attendance of 41 pupils. Ihe institution has.a teaching staff of three Sisters of St. Bride's Convent, Mastertou, namely, Mother Bridget, Mother De Sales and Sister Margaret Mary. A telegram received from Westport, last evening, stated that the body of Bartholomew Lambert, a single man 1 , agei 55 years, who libh been missing since Tuesday, January 23rd, was found floating in the river to-day. At the inquest a verdict was returned that deceased was found drowned, but there was no evidence to show how ho had come to get into the river. At a meeting of tbo Auckland Gas Company, on Monday, it was decided to reduue the price of gas 3d p«r thousand cubic feet, making it 4s 9d, in addition to certain special discounts to larger ooasumers. The reductions will represent a total value of about £6,000. It was also decided to increase the dividend by 6d per share, making it 8s instead of 7s 6d for the past half-year. Ihe directors anticipate that when established in the company's new works economies effected in the manufacture of gas will be such as to enable them to make further reductions in the price of gas in the uear future. In dealing with a 19 year old gin, charged with drunkenness at the Auckland Police Court, last week, the presiding Magistrate (Mr C. C. Kettle) remarked gthat it was u scandalous and disgusting thing for a young girl like the defendant to be served with liquor. The girl informed the Magistrate that she had been to the Takapuna Races, and had been drinking at the publican's booths in oomnany with a number of other girls much about her own age. The Sub-inspector of Police added that there was nothing in the law to prevent girls from being served with liquor, and that it was an every-day occurrence.
