The Wallanetown Hotel, just inside the Invercargill electorate, says Ihe Clutha Free Presa, has jumped in value from £1,500 to <£5,000.

The timber export is brisk at Auckland. The barque Empreza has just left there with half a million feet for Australian ports.

During the past month the Waitaki County Council has received 79,008 birds' eggs, for whioh it has paid the sum of £63 14s 9d.

The Council of Victoria College have offered a renewal of engagement, for a term of five years, to Mr Hunter, professor of, mental science.

On Saturday morning the first brick of Mr W. Rose's nejw auotion mart at Dannevirke was laid by Mr Rose himself, a number of farmers and settlers being present. A writer in the Southland Times suggests that the continued bad weather is a matter for. prayer, and the various ohurohes should appoint a day for Divine intercession.

The Wairarapa Amateur Athletic Association will commence a series of eveniog sports gatherings in the Park, od Friday evening next. The programme, on Friday, will include a 100 yards handicap, > half-mile walking-handicap and throwing the hammer. Admission is free.

A new colonial record for a long jump was established at the Dunedin Civil Service Harriers' sports, oa Saturday, when Keddell, of Oamara, jumped 22ft sin, being seven inches better than the previous record. Burk won the quarter-mile event from soratch in 53 3-ssec, on a heavy track.

The annual sheep returns show Hawke's Bay at the head of .the list of the colony with 1,036,135. Cook County seoond with 1,012,311. Mr T. S. VVilliams, of Tuparoa, ia the largest in the colony, the sheep on bis two stations numbering close on 90,000.

The annual distribution of prizes to the pupils of the Carterton Methodist Sunday School took plaoe on Sunday afternoon, about eighty books being distributed amongst the ohildren. The Mayor, Mr Jas. Brown, who presented the prizes, /delivered a short and impressive address to the parents and ohildren. A gold medal for the highest marks was awarded to Misa Ida Aplin. the medal has to be gained two years in succession before it can be permanently won.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Management of the Y.M.O.A. was held last evening. Preliminary business in connection with the special general meeting, to be held on February 12th, was transacted. An application from the Sedretary of the sub-centre of the Tailors' Union for the use of a room for monthly meetingsj was granted. Mr, R, Brown wrote in reference to his appointment to the Board, and stated that the night on which the Board held their monthly meeting did not suit his business. The prisoner Oiook, who escaped from Mount Oook gaol, last week, and was subsequently re captured, was sentenced, at Wellington, yesterday, to a further term of six imonths' imprisonment for escaping and to three months' imprisonment for the theft of clothes while at liberty.

New York papers publish a telegram from Egg Lake, Alberta, in which it is stated that a vast subterranean lake of petroleum has been discovered in North West Canada. The oil, whioh is now gushing forth from the earth in large quantities, is said to be of the highest quality.

A pative, named Mita Wata, was, yesterday, arrested oo warrant at Te Whiti, by Constable Learmouth. The charge against him is that of having made use of obscene language in Qaeen Street. Masterton, on December 23rd. The accused will appear before the Magistrate's Court this morning, and in the meantime be is oat on bail, which was granted by Mr G. Heron, J.P., in one surety of £25 and accused in a similar amount.

The trial of the "Twentieth Century" gaslight for street lighting in Carterton will be flushed this evening. The Council have di- I ,cussed with the Company the question of cost and other points in connecton wiith the installation, of the new light, bnt it is not likely the Council will delay proceedings for the installation of coal gas, although itis possible they may grant the company the concession they ask, viz., the use of the gas mains, pipes and holders for a full trial of petrol gas. A display of the "Twentieth Century" gas is to be made in the ■treefcs of Grey town.

Mr J. Oolway had a narrow escape from a serious accident last week. He was riding a bicycle down a cutting on the Gladstone .Road, and when turning a corner a horse, straying on the road, suddenly came aoross his Datb. To save himself from colliding with the horse, Mr Colway put out his hand, and touched the horse on the hindquarters. Immediately, the animal swerved round and kicked out, oatohing the front wheel of the bicycle with both hind heels. Mr Colway was thrown heavily to the ground, but with tlie exception of a few bruises 6scaped serious injury. The front wheel of the bicycle was smashed to pieces, while ttie bar, handles >nd seat were also damaged. The accident necessitated Mr Oolway walking home, a distance of over ten miles.

At their last meeting the Timaru Borough Gounoil discussed a proposal to ereci; a workmen's home in Timaru, the work to b>3 undertaken by the municipality. After fully discussing the matter the proposal was rejected, only throe councillors voting for it.

There is a movement afoot in Timaru at present in the direoiion of having a special holiday set apart for all trade picnics. The present system, under which each trade holds its piunio on a different day, is regarded as inconvenient and a hindrance to business.

A dilatory passenger by train from Orekpuki, on Wednesday evening, missed his footing when trying to board a moving car, and was dragged for a considerable distance. The driver, looking back, saw the ocurrence and applied the Westjnghouse brake, whioh acted magically in pulling up tbe train, and the man Was rescued, escaping without a scratch.

New Zealand users of acetylene gas and oarbide uf caloium lamps will be interested to learn that on apoeal to the House of Lords, in an aotion impunging the validity of Wilson's master patent for tbe manufacture of nalcium carbide, the patent was declared to be bad, says a contemporary. As a result of this decision one would naturally expect the cost of oarbide to be reduced.

A new method of swindling is being practiced at Palmerston at present. The method adopted by the operacor'is to visit offices in town and take possession, of any unpaid bills which are on the file. The bills are then discharged by means of forged oheques whioh exceed the amount of the bills, the swindler taking the balance in cash.

"The English language does not oontain words enough to express my hearftelt thanks to you," fervently declared a grey-headed old man, bent np with rheumatism, as the Gi«borne Magistrate granted a renewal of his old age pension. Another pensioner, an old Maori veteran, whose tatnoed head would doubtless have been considered a great prize a few years back, frankly admit'ed that he owned no land, cattle, sheep, horses, or pigs. "All that I own is myself," he solemnly announced.

The Auckland Herald urges that the recommendation of the Kapanui Inquiry Court, "that a sufficient number of water police should be apppointed for the port of Auckland," should command the attention and approval of the Police Department. It is stated that the previously limited number of water police has gradually been retrenched almost to extinction. The Herald says "this state of affairs repeatedly gives rise to grave difficulties, and is responsible for the scandals that frequently disgrace Auckland waters." •
