The Dunedin Star says that since September the young fry liberated from thePorfcobello Marine Hatchery have agreggated 650,000 flounders, 90,000 soles and 80,000 prawns. Mr Richard Holder, a settler, has discovered iu a small limestone cavern, near Waitomo caves, Hamilton, the wpll-preserved skeleton of a moa. The bones are slightly coate d with carbonate of lime. The Wellington evening paper has renewed its crusade against what it terms "sweating" iu the dairies. The paper has Written to a uumber of people op the subject and has received mixed replies.. It remark*: "They (the replies') go to show that the cbldren are still, milking their four, five, six, seven and more cuws in the bitter slush, of early frozen mornings, preparatory to their long journey to' school, and that the question is as much iu need of official enquiry as ever." This is another instance of }he absurd city individual who tries to teaoh the farmer his business. Had the Post made Inquires it would have found . that the factories are closed down and the cows turned out during the period of the- year when there are "bitter slush" and "early frozen mornings." We do not know if our contemDorary tasted . the slush to see if it were bitter, but we would like to Know if the mornings are frozen for export. Also, we would advise him to allow the cow some time in the year in which to oalve.—Carterton Loader.
