AN EXCITING TIME.
FIRE ON A STEAMER. i 1 , AUCKLAND, Jan. 24. Captain P. Macelwain aodtheorew of the s.s. Kawau har] an ecxiting time in the early hoars of Tuesday, The Kawau was moored alongside * the Mangawai wharf* and at halfpast two a.m. Chief Engineei Long was awakened by flames and smoke entering his cabin. He promptly gave the alarm, atad the captain, officers an 4 crew were soon bard at work trying to suppress the flames. As at first it was impossible to. get into th<» engine-room, the Are bav - ing, as it was afterwards ascertained, originated in one of the starboard coal bunkers, a bucket brigade wbb formed. When the Are in the engine' room had been got under by this method, a donkey-entene was got to work pumping water, which was directed on the seat of the Are and soon subduediit. The extent of the damage will not be ascertained until a survey has been made.
