WHAREAMA SPORTS.

(From Our Own Correspondent). TINUI, Moaday. The Whareama Sports Sooiety held their second annual gathering, on the 20th instant, on the Langdale Domain, and exceeded all anticipations. Such a large crowd of people has sever before.l?een in the district. The day was perfect, and visitors' jdui'neyed from-Masterton, Carterton and surrounding districts. ground was prettily decorated with bunting, and the sloping bill thickly dotted with ladies and children in gay summer costumes, made a pretty picture. At 10.30 o'clock the Whareama "brass, wood and iron band" arrived, with "dinger Dick, the lion tamer," on the buck-jumping mule, and needless to say caused much amusement. Several other comical costumes worn by the men from Blairiogie Station created a considerable amount of laughter. In many instances the latter were loudly cheered for some olever feats of horsemanship. "The bearded lion" broke away from his chain during the polo match, and picked the ball up and bolted home. The polo match worked the crowd up to a high pitch of excitement, and was cleverly won by the "Blockheads." During the whole day there was not a hitch, the whole arrangements going like clock work. The horse events caused some nasty accidents. Miss Jackson had a narrow escape while tilting at the ring, through her mount falling. Fortunately the bystanders caught the horse by the bridle before it oould get up, otherwise the young lady would have been dragged, as her riding habi*; was caught on the saddle. Mr A. A. Cameron, while dismounting at full gallop, rather seriously injured his knee, and will not be able to get about for a few weeks, while Messrs J. Collerton and D. Stevens, also, injured themselves while dismounting. The visitors expressed pleasure at the completeness of all arrange ments, and, also, of the officials for their courtesy; but special praise is due to Mr Hugh Murri-< son and other members of the same family for their untiringefforts to promote the comfort and amusement of the visitors. Following are the results of the foot events :~ Maiden Race.—Larrbton, 1; B. Sohofleld, 2; Meredith, 3. Hurdle Race.—W. James, 1; D. Cole, 2; W. Blizzard 3. - 100 i"ards Handicap.—La Roohe, 1: J. R.
