Ideal woatber and a large attendance of tbe nublic favoured the inaugiual 6Doits gathering of tbe Wairarapa Amateur Atbletio Club, which was held on tho Park Oval, yesterday. Tbe programme was an oxcelleut one, and tbe running of all tho events up to time lent au additional feature to the day s sports, as well as eurniug for the Club the heartinst congratulations of ha patrons. Tho starter, Mr J. C. McKillop, is to be congratulated on the excellent starts, and tbe fiuishes voro without exception close and exciting. There wore no acci dents to mar the da.vs outing, add the whole proceedings wore of a most enjoyable and interesting character. In the 100 Yards Mnidou Race, G. Wbito ran second in the first heat, but was not eligible to start in the final, owing to bis having run at a professional meeting at tho Hutt, on Boxing Day. Arrangements for the meeting were perfect in every detail. Each competitor wore, as well as his number, a coloured 3ash, and immediately after a race, flags of corresponding colours were shown to denote the first and second places. Then there wa=i tho megaphono, used for tho first time at a sports gathering in Masterton, by which tbe results and times were transmitted to all parts of tbe ground immediately after the event. On only one occasion was the standard time beaten, and that was in the Iwo-milo Handicap by J. 11. ■ Prejideville by 10 l-sseca. This little runner put np a fine performance, and was loudly cheered a3 ho ; fiuiabed. The Wellington Provincial Championship (100 yards) was : won, after an exciting race, by P. W. B Goodbehere. The Mile Walk proved very interesting, and was won by W. R. sarey (Hutt), who has on excellent style, and the judge, Mr H. Goodwin, was very much impressed with his walking, and is of opinion that more will be feea.rd of, Jjjaj as a walker. The Ladles' Bracelet brought out a field Of 18, and was won by G. B. Taylor, of Wellington. In this event cue of the competitors, for breaking away three times, was not allowed to start. The Masterton -Gymnasium Club team won three parts of the Teams Bace (half-mile), but in the final sprint had to give way to the Port Nicholson A.A. Club. Tne visiting competitors from Wellington and Hutt were very successful, and the Master ton competitors were sharers in the honours of the day. Tbe afternoon's proceedings were enlivened by tho Masterton Municipal Band rendering several selections. The various officials worked hara to make tbe day's tports a success, and the Secretaries, Messrs J. L. Conlan and J. Bradbury, were indefatigable in the discharge Of their duties. Tibe Press were creditably catered for, and in this department Mr M. C. Cameron, as Press Steward, did excellent service. The takings at tho gates amounted to approximately £55.
