WELLINGTON RACING CLUB.

OPENING OP THE NEW RACECOURSE. The Wellington Racing Club held their first meeting on the new Racecourse at Trentham, on Saturday, in ideal weather. ' There was a large attendance of the public, including ■"sports" from all parts of the colony, alao, several hundred frcm the Wnirarapa. Sir J. G. Ward was present and represented the Government. The course is prettily situated, and convenient for patrons, as trains run to a siding alongside the course. No effort hue been spared by tho Club to make the buildings and conveniences aa up-to-date as possible. Visitors from both the North aud South expressed pleasure at the completeness of all tho arrangements. The course, with the appointments, is considered to be the finest in the colony, with the exception of the Kiccartou course, ; which is looked upon as the best in ' the colony. At the luncheon Sir L G. Word .congratulated the Olub on having secured a course which, be believed, would prove to bo true-of tho finest south of the line. ;; capital day's snort was witnessed. ' Tho sum ut £23.729 was handled by the machines, which, though uot a record for Ihe colony, is a record for >the Wellington Racing Club. Tne double tot-alisa-tor, ou the Cup and TeiegraDh liaudicap, paid a dividend of £92. Tho completeness of the arraugemeuta testified to the excellent work that had 'been done by tho efficient Secretary of the Ciub ; Mr A. E. Whyte, aud the other officials. Achillea and Ropa fought out the issue nearly the whole way, but in the straight Ropa, favoured with a light weight, nut down Achilles, and won by a length and a-quarter. Melodeon beating Paritutu by a quarter of a length for third place. Time, 2miu 33seo (a record for the colony). Dividends, £29 18s and £2 6s. Telegraph Handioap, 6. furlongs. —Ailsa, 8.4, 1; Petrovna, 8.13,2; Sir Tristram, 7.11,3. All started, but Bailarat, Chivalry and Black Reynard.
