OPENING OF A NEW RAILWAY. By Telegraph—Press Association. HOKITIKA January 8. The opening of the first section of the Hokitika-Ross railway was performed this afternoon by the Premier and Minister of Lands. There were over 4000 people present. In the evening the Ministers were entertained at a public banquet. The Premier, in bis speeoh, dwelt largely on local subjects, referring to Hokitiua as one of the soundest financial towns in the colony. The returns of the Government Savings Bank, he said, showed a larger percentage of dej-osits than any other town of similar size. He strongly advised the looal people to go in for more substantial improvements, especially first-class hotel accommodation, to attract more tourist traffio to view Westland's scenic wonders. He predicted that ere long thousands of visitors would find their way to Weatland, and he would ask the Tourist Department to provide better facilities. The Premier said that in order to develop the immense natural resources of Westland it was necessary to co-operate with Otago with a view to extending the railway from Hokitika through South Westland to conneot with the Otago Central line.
