MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
QUARTERLY RETURNS. The quarterly returns of the business transacted at the Masterton Magistrate's Court shows that the Court sat fortnightly for the transaction of civil and criminal business, and the number of such sittings presided over by a stipendiary magistrate aud by Justices of the Peace was 27 each. The total number of cases heard by a stipendiary magistrate and Justices of the peace were each 40. The aggregate amount sued for was £BBS 19a 2d, and the aggregate amount recovered was £599 6s 7d, while the amount of civil fees paid in stamps was £44 ss, and the amount of licensing fees paid in stamps was £2 ss. The number of applications heard in Court or Chambers was 5, the number of orders made (other than judgment summonses) 3, the number of plaints entered 88, the number of distress warrants issued 12, the number of judgment summonses issued 8, the number of orders made on judgment summonses 9, the number of warrants of committal issued 1, the < number of summonses and other processes served by the bailiff and assistants 106, and the number of distress warrants executed by the bailiff and assistants 13. The criminal returns show that the number of persons taken into custody, summoned or apprehended, was 117 males and 8 females, the number discharged for want of prosecution or want of evidence 8 males and 1 female, the number dismissed on merits 1 male, the number committedfor trial 3 males, thenumber summarily convicted 95' males and 4 females, and the number otherwise dealt with 13 males and 3 females. The amount of criminal fees paid was £52 13s
