LEAVING THE COUNTRY.
ENGLISH MONEY INVESTED IN GEKMANY. By the latest; mail from England it is learned that an English syndicate has juat purchased three of the largest potash works in Germany, at Wallensen, Tbaeste, and Duingen. Every year, indeed, the amount of money suDk by English capitalists in German mines and factories is rapidly increasing. "Thereason for this is very obvious," said a trade authority to an Express representative recently. "People with surplus money are afraid-to invest it in British industries, which are so hampered by Free Trade that they can make little or no profit and are gradaaly declining. "The Potash Syndicate knows that by having their works in Germany they can send their goods into England duty free, while sheltering beneath the protective wall. On the other hand if they established the , works in England they would have to pay a heavy duty if they exported to Germany. German papers, particularly the Deutsche Zeitung, are taking the matter up. and declare that speedy legislation is needed to prevent these purchases becoming a national danger. 'England will not have Protection herself, yet her merchants and manufacturers wish to profit by the countries which safeguard themselves, is the gist of the aigumente used. "There is a great deal of truth in this, and the English capitalists make large profits by establishing themselves in Germany. But the English workmen and shoDkeepers lose. iH "Hundreds of businesses have gone out of England during the past few years. To mention but a few. the Bradford Dyers' Association has opened large works iu Germany, as have the pottery Arm of Thomas W. Twyford and Johnson Brothers, the lace firms of the late Mr Mandella and of Jacoby, M.P., part of the soap works of Messrs Lever Brothers, and so on."
