RACING.

WaIRARAPA racing club. SECOND DAY. (By Special Reporter). The Summer Meetins of the Wairarapa Racing Club was concluded at Tauherenikau yesterday. Rain fell in the morning, b'.t the weather turned out fiue In the afternoon. There waa a good attendance of the public. The course was heavy at the start, but dried nn during the afternoon. The sum of £6833 was put through the totalisator, as against £5620 for the second day last year. The total . for the meeting was £16,72!), as against .£14,142 last year, an increase of £2583. Mr E. A. Laery, the secretary, had, as usual, all the . arrangements complete. A meeting of the Stewards was held to hear an explanation by Reitl, who rode Declination in the Pukio Handicap on the first day, and the same mare in the Piriuoa Back Handicap yesterday. In the former race Declination was unplaced. but she won the latter event on the second day. Mr W. E. Bidwill, a vice-president of the club, and owner of Declination, explained that be had had the meeting called to allow tho jockey to make an explanation about the, mare's running, as it might be thought by the public that "something waa wrong," and it would give Keid a chance to clear himself. Reid said that Little Sister falliug in the Pukio Handicap interfered with him. Declination bad to jump over her, and went wide out on the course. He had to "thump" the mare along to get her well up with the field again, and this took >t out of her, and she had nothing left for tho final tussle. He had orders to keep the mare in a good position and send her along. Ho received practically the same orders in the Piriuoa Hack Handicap, and, rtiere being no accidents, he was able to beep the mare in a good position. She seemed to go better than the first day, and he thought the gallop did tier good. It was resolved that the explanation given was very satisfactory to the Stewards.
