Tho thirteenth annual gathering of the Wairarapa Caledonian Society was held on the Park Oval yes terday, and proved a record in tbe annals of the Society. Though threatening, the laiu hung off, and ideal sports weather prevailed. The attendance is estimated at between Bix aud seven thousand, and all appeared to enjoy tbe sports, tbe programme being one that would appeal to every taste. Tho officials are to be commended for the manner in which they kept the events up to time. The starts were generally good, and the finishes close. In almost every beat in tbe bicycle events there was a fall, but with no serious result. In the Maiden Bicycle Race Kilminster fell and was cut about the legs and srm, and in tne One .Mile Race four riders came down, but two of thein finished. There were other minor casualties and the Ambulsnce Corps rendered what aid was necessary. All the accidents 100 ourred in the one spot, and the opinion" was freely expressed that some improvements should be effected on the track. In the dancing events, W. 11. Kilgour, who won the majority of the dances at Feilding, proved successful in four out of the six events and obtained a second in the other two. wrestling (catch-as-calch-can style) again fell to the lot ci H. Sandow, after a very exciting bout with Moana Paratene. Great interest was centred in the woodchopping events, but the finishes were not so close as last year. The success of the' sports is due in no small measure to the untiring efforts of the secretary, Mr Thos. Duncan, who was ably assisted by Mr W. Gillespie. The Masterton Municipal Brass Band were present, and added greatly to the enjoyment of the day. The takings at the gates j amounted to approximately £lßs—a | record—as against £136 15s for last year. - The grandstand takings were £2l 4s, compared with £23 2s for 1905, It will be remembered that last year's sports were carried cn in wet weather, and this would account for the small gate and larger stand takings on that occasion.
