CORRESPONDENCE

We will be pleased to receive letters on subjects of general interest to Upper Hutt residents. If suitable they will be published under the above heading-, subject, of course, to the limitations of space. It is understood that the opinions, criticisms or suggestions expressed by our correspondents are their own and not necessarily the views of the "Weekly Review." Correspondence can appear under a nom-de-plume but correspondents must enclose their name and address to the Editor.

(To the Editor) Sir —In reply to the Mayor's Criticisms of my previous letter and his astonishment of my inaccuracies, I would like the public to judge for itself after reading the following : (a) The band left the Council Chambers on account of the room being too small and unsuitable. (b) We found it impossible to practice further at the Record Hall under the conditions there and owing to the hall being let and the band having to remove to the Cosy Theatre. The Mayor's remarks concerning the school committee or chairman are absolutely unfounded, the band never having notice from the school committee to quit. Re Druids' Hall. The band were never at any thne offered the use of their hall. The following are the correct amounts received as subsidy from the council for my 11 years of conductorship, showing an average of £23 per year. 1928-29, £3O; 192930, £35; 1930-31, £35; 1931-32, £2O; 1932-33, £2O; 1933-34, £ls; 193435, £2O ; 1935-36, £SO ; 1936-37, £25 ; a total of £250. As stated in my previous letter assets to the value of approximately £BOO have been handed to the council which goes to prove that the band is in no way indebted to the council. In conclusion I would like to point out that at one of our annual meetings the discussion of a band room emanated from the Mayor by inviting me to select a site in Maidstone Park. After doing so, I enquired the next procedure and was told to wait until the council purchases the park. I trust that these will clarify the band's position. L. A. NEIGHBOURS.
