NEW ZEALAND LABOUR PARTY.

UPPER HUTT BRANCH.

As a result of a resolution following a discussion on the desirability of a general application of the five-day working week, the Upper Hutt Branch of the New Zealand Labour Party urges house-wives in the district to secure their household provisions during the week, so to avoid shopping on Saturday. As a large number of workers are now deriving the benefit of the forty hours legislation, it is only right and just that the people should endeavour to secure a fiye-day "working week for shop employees. The objective as above set out can only be attained by the united effort and active co-operation of each and every household in the district. In conclusion we ask the residents of the Upper' Hutt Borough to receive this request in a favourable and sympathetic manner, thus ensuring the complete success of the venture.

LOCAL NEWS. The local branch of the U.S.A. is holding Rose Day on Friday next (see advertisement) . The president and executive are looking forward to big things and sincei-ely hope that the general public will assist them by buying from their sellers. There are approximately about 40 returned men in the district unemployed, and such days as Rose Day and Poppy Day are held to augment the funds for assisting such soldiers.

UPPER HUTT BOWLERS UNLUCKY. One rink from the Upper Hutt Bowling Club visited Lower Hutt on Monday last and participated in the Labour Day competitions. The team was unfortunate in that they lost by one point in the final, after going right through the elimination rounds. The local team was represented by Messrs. A. Mumby, R. Campbell, P. Quinn and J. Brown (skip). The match for the Edwin Feathers, of which Upper Hutt at present are the holders, was to take place on "Wednesday afternoon, their opponents being Wellington.
