CRICKET.
The Maoribank Colts were engaged with a team from Kilbirnie on Labour Day, and after a good game were defeated. Nevertheless the baby team of the Upper Hutt League put up a woflderful performance against such formidable opponents. For the Colts Tucker, 31, Ix-vine 26 and Auckram 12 were the three top scorers, and Dunn was the most successful with the ball taking three wickets for 60 runs. Darcy Auckram taking three for 81, was not so good as was expected, but considering- that it is only the beginning of the season, the team no doubt in genei-al will vastly improve. Thanks are due to Mr. Irvine, who has again taken charge of these boys, and we hope that at the end of the season, the Colts will be able to look back on 1936-37 as a very successful one. The Upper Hutt Cricket League is hoping to commence its season on November 7, when there will be three matches played. There are seven teams entered in the League, necessitating a bye every week, and the League would be very grateful for- a further nomination to make an even quota. The members of the League are disappointed in the late start again this season, but the Park not being ready for cricket contributed to the delay. An attempt -will be made next season to start at the same time as the city clubs. A practice match is being arranged on Saturday (to-morrow), between Upper Hutt and the U.S.A. team the game to start at 2 p.m. Players from both teams are asked to make an effort to be present as early as possible.
