UPPER HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Inspectors' Report on Public Halls.
The fortnightly meeting of the TJpper Hutt Borough Council was held on Monday evening last, the Mayor (Mr. A. J. McCurdy) presiding. There were also present Councillors Keys (Deputy Mayor), Blewman, Baskett, Guthrie, Greig, Howell, Purvis, Sutherland and the Town Clerk (Mr. R. C. Major) . A letter from the Hutt Valley Power Board, re removing the central suspension lights and replacing with bracket lights on the side of the streets was thoroughly discussed. Councillor Howell stated it was a move in the right direction, as in his opinion they were not satisfactory for traffic. Councillor Greig thought the suspension lights were more advantageous to the citizens, as they covered the whole of the area around them, whereas if bracket lights were used they would light only one side of the street. The Mayor: The centre lights covered the whole of the road and the footpaths. Councillox - Guthrie: There are other people to consider besides the motorists. Councillor Howell: I think the Board is correct. You find all big cities with lights on brackets at the side of the streets. Councillor Keys: It should be left to the Public Service Committee to go into the matter, and I move accordingly. Councillor Baskett: I will second that motion, and I would like to know who has to pay for the cost of alteration if we carried out the suggestion of the Board. The Mayor: We would have to pay for the alterations. On the vote it was referred to the Public Service Committee to go into the matter. A letter received from the Hutt County Council re the proposed River Protection, from Maori Bank to the Borough Boundary was read in which that body regretted they were not interested in it sufficiently to meet the local body. Councillor Purvis: I regret the County takes vip that attitude. It is only by co-operation that we can get something done. Councillor Keys : There have been a number of occasions when the County has not worked in with us, and it is now left for the ratepayers of the County to take the matter up. Councillor Howell: I agree with Councillor Keys. There have been numerous occasions when we have done our best to meet the County in various matters.
The Mayor: There are quite a number of properties on the river bank from Trentham to Maori Bank which are in the County. The letter was referred to the Works Committee to report upon at the next meeting. Health Inspector's Report. The Health Inspector (Mr. Yarnell) reported that one case of infectious disease had been reported and the usual precautions taken. AJso that building permits had been granted for the last two months to the total of £3038.
